Such is the stupid reply with which we are frequently met when endeavoring to persuade men and women to a life of tota: abstinence. To them we heartily commen the careful perusal of the following list of illustrious total abstainers, all of whom have shed a lustre on the land of their birth :—

It will thus be seen that the unpopular principle of total abstinence has been ac- cepted by theologians, warriors by land and sea, explorers in hot and cold regions, poets (not mere rhymesters), painters, physicians and scientists, wits and humorists, philan- thropists, statesmen - yea, even kings.

It only remains to be added that the foregoing list is not at all of an exhaustive character ; nevertheless it clearly shows that total abstiners can claim some men who are certainly quite as talented as those who so glibly say, *‘I won’t abstain, because none but weak-minded people sign the pledge.—Arrow.

Woman's Traits.

Women do not read; they listen with the eye.

A woman would sooner rule a heart than fill it ; not so a man.

Friendship between women is only a suspension of hostilities.

A woman need not always recall her age, but she should never forget it.

A woman listens to a play with her mind, and judges it with her senses.

It takes as much wit not to displease a woman as it takes to please her.

A woman’s friendship is, as a rule, the legacy of love or the alms of indifference.

Heaven gave women tongues to ask questions with, and eyes to give answers with.

It is surprising how near age brings a woman to death, and how little it pre pares her for it.

The woman who confides to one man her partiality for another seeks advice less than an avowal.

We are always anxious to know why we are loved; they only care to know how much we love them.

In church women think that they re- ceive because they observe, and that they are meditating when they are only hold- ing their tongucs.

It is often a more meritorious act for a woman to allow something good to be said of another woman than it would be for her to say it herself.

The highest mark of esteem a women can give to a man is to ask her friendsbip, and the most signal proof of her differ- ence is to offer him hers.

Women attain perfection in but two departments of literature—letters and memoirs. They only write weil when they imagine that they are talking.

She is to be pitied who thinks to find a friend other than her busband if she be a wite, than her ehildren if she bea mother, thun god if she be neither.

As « rule women care little for comedy, because it. makes them enter into them- selves. Give them the drama which draws them out of themselves.
