RATTERY MAY BE SO NEARLY EXHAUSTED that ll will not ‘urn the cngfne over and still may be strong enough to furnish ‘he ignition current required to start the engine. if hand crnnkina ls resorted to and when once the engine is running not only will there be current available from the generator for lights. eta. but the battery will begin to recharge. lo case of a battery thus run down. the first thing to do is to attach the crank and try starting by hand. retard- ing the spark lover sufficiently to guard sgslnst “back kicks" and pulling up instead of pressing down on the crank. Do not make futile attempts lo crank with the starting motor. as this may hopelessly deplete. the buttery and destroy tbe chance of success. ln order to insure firing on the first spark. each cylinder should be primed though the plug hole or pct cock and the choker closed. before cranking. lf there is still con- pidernble "life" in the battery. the engine will probably start and. if be kept fairly rich and the speed reasonably high for a time. it will probably keep going and gradually recharge the battery. However. it may be that the battery ls too nearly "dead" to furnish the necessary ignition current and the engine fails to start. but even hen ll. is sometimes possible to obtain the required voltage from the lottery. if it is not absolutely discharged. in the primary ignition rlrcult. mounted usually as a part of the coll or of the distributor- lead, ls s small resistance unit. or ballast coll. the resistance of which reduces the current under normal conditions. By shortclrcultlng this. [ls resistance is withdrawn from the circuit and. ln the case of a very wreak battery. this procedure ‘may increase the ignition current to a workable point. Connecting the primary wiring so as not to includo this coll ls thus s trick worth trying. Many cars use no cut-out in rounection with the generator and. when the ignition switch is closed. aulte a heavy current discharges from the battery through the generator until the engine is at speed. This flow of current causes a substantial drain on the battery and. if ll ls nearly discharged. rnay defeat ignition. The temporary disconnection of the generator wire at its terminal is {mother expedient that may profitably be made use of. in the hop» of yectirlng starting ignition. if all these stiblerfuges fail. the only recourse is a new battery or the use of a set of dry-cells connected to the ignition circuit only

HE (‘ONDITION OF THE lGNITlON SYSTEM inevitably da- lerlorntes in service with the development, sooner or later of sparltin: ililllcultics and the. following are some of the points where trouble ruay. in time. manifest itself in Ford cars: The contact surface of lhc commutator may become unevenly worn. so that the roller of the brush cannot follow its surface but. at times. jumps partly or wholly over onr» or more of the four steel segments. thus lalllng to make proper connection to the coll units. Rapid wear is generally due t0 failure lo oil the commutator frequently enough and replacement is the remedy The brush spring may be ton weak to hold the roller in contact or the segments and roller may be loo dirty to insure reliable connection. The wires leading to the commutator cable may become loose in their cinrlinz screws. broken through the repeated bending to which they arc subjected or abra cur‘ \nl. in which case a new cable of the coil units wear sway gradually. until they are too far apart. requir- ing that file thumb nut should be screwed down so that the gap ls [~32 inch. if the points have worn unevenly and do not make a flat contact. they should be trned up with a list. file before being adjusted. The winding or condenser of a coil unit occasionally fails. and replace- ment becomes necessnsy. Car vibration is constantly tending to loosen screw connections and this applies to those of the coll box. the ignition switch and all other parts. Tlghtcnlng all wire connections is the obvious remedy. Spark-plug points burn away in service. making the rpnrk gap ton wide for easy starting or reliable ignition at high speed and must occasionally be bent together so as to have a 1~32 inch gap. Plug: arc occasionally found shorcclrcuited through the cracking of the. porcelain and verv often from the fouling of the insulation by oil or gasoline soot. replacement or cleaning being the respective remedies. Plugs that leak gas should be replaced or tightened. Spsrk~plug cables may have had their insulation. damaged by oil or rubbing against some- thing. so that the sparking current escapes to the engine or another cable. ln which case new cables are required. The magneto magnets may bnvc become weakened and need recharging, or the magnets and culls may have more than the required 113.2 inch clearance. Dirt may haw- worked in under the magneto contact springs. which can be

Answer: We cannot. be sure an to the reason for this, but very often. looseness in the timing gears causes noisy idling. Bo long as the crank-shaft speed is constant. throughout each rotation. the tim- ing gears teeth remain in continu- ous contact and run quietly. but if rotational speed varies the driven gear may tend to run ahead of the

Answer: This ls a rather diffi-

cult question to answer definitely. Quite likely you do not refer strict.- ly to the lost motion ln the drive shaft itself. but to the total lost mo- lion between the front universal and the rear wheels. which ls made up of a number of factors. Prac- tically speaking, this backlash is detrimental mainly because there ls usually a distinct shock and noise when the car is started from rest and almost always when its dl- rection of mollon is reversed. This lost motion means that the uni- versals are worn. that the gear ‘teeth involved have too much clear- ance. that the wheels arc loans on the axln-shnfls or someiihln! of this kind and. lf it becomes excessive there are severe starting swells! imposed on the gears and the wheels loosen up fut. We should advise you no: to allow lt to get they are noticeable and cause gear bad enough so that when the car chattering. -
