ll Strange But True

The Loyalty Islanders all play music and dance. Indeed, they employ rhythm and grace in all the actions of life.

Men and boys spend much of their leisure moments in ”doliing tip”. Here the women pay no at- tention to their hair, except. to keep it short. It. is the males who go in for special hair-duos. oil. perfumes, and what not. No clo- .hing is worn until the age of twenty-five or thirty. and then everybody dresses alike, except that chief: wear more elaborate irnaments.

In olden times the inhabitants if the island were cannibals. If i man had a surplus of wives and 1 very large. family, it would be ill right. now and then, to cook me of his own children to eke nit the family larder. The child would be roasted whole, wrapped in banana or coconut leaves to, impart flavor. While we shuddeig at the mere thought of such bar-i barity these simple living folk have much in their social and physiological order that would put Western civili7.ation to shame.

They have no fear of death, Old age is a. badge of respect, and is therefore an honorable time of life Even in wars they never re- verted to the civilized custom of 1iaking innocent women and chilv .ii-en suffer. It is interesting to note that dancing has always been in vogue. This is true all over the world. The dance was mst practiced-as part of a religious ritual, and still is in inaizy countries. Every Am- erican Indian tribe had its own religious dances, varied and elab- orate. The Shamans of Northern Siberia still practic'e their estatic ieligious rlaticos, as do also the riirkish people, only the latter confines the dance wit.h song and prayer, as a regular part of their devotional service.

Until a few centuries back it was not uncommon to see dancing in English Cathedrals. Crossing .wer the English Channel to the land of sunny France, we learn Llfat. priests dancr-d in the choir It Easter up to the i7th century.

So you see, dancing and relig- lnn wont hand in hand up until, comparatively recent times.

We see. this rhythm also in the world of lower animals and in- nects. The moths and the butter- flies, the ostrich and many birds, with their fellows innumeral, rlancing their love steps to attract the female of their choice. How
