A mail by way of the Capes arrived last evening, and another crossed over to the Main. land te day—arriving at twelve. There is no mail for this Island te-day, and the) couriers did not cross to Cape Traverse.

A pepvutTation of Caughnawaga Indians, headed by three of their chiefs, with names unpronouncable, waited recently upon Mr. Mc- Laren, Q. C., of Montreal, with a view to ob- tain his assistance in petitioning the govern- ment at Ottawa for emancipation from the leading strings of the Department of the In- terior. They contend that they are ready for citizenship, and want to take their place as Canadian citizens. They claim that there are provisions in the iaw which give them this right. ‘They ask for cession to them of farms and lands and the privilege of voting and ex- ercising their rights as free men.

Ar a regular meeting of St. Patrick's T. A. & B. Society, held in St. Patrick's Hall, on January 25th, 1880, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted .—

Whereas, Our Heavenly Father, in His in- finite wisdom, has seen fit to remove from our midst, by the hand of death, our much esteemed and worthy brother—the late Daniel J. McCarthy, who has been for nsarly two years a faithful member of our Society ; and

Whereas, The deceased having endeared himself to us all by the zealous and disinter- ested’ manner in which he has labored for the good of our Society; be it therefore

Resolved, That while we humbly submit to the Will of Divine Providence, yet we cannot refrain from expressing our heartfelt sorrow for the loss of one whose pure and unassuming character was worthy ef the highest respect and esteem.

Resolved, That we tender our most sincere sympathies to the widow and relatives of the deceased in this the hour of their sad bereave- ment.

Resolved, That copies of the foregoing reso- lutions be presented to the widow of our late brother, published in the EXaMINER, Herald, New Era, and entered on the Records of the Society.

George Eliot and Her Late Husband.

James Steele Mackaye once dramatized ‘‘Silas Marner,” and went to call on George Eliot to ask her consent to its pro- duction. Mr. Mackaye is reported as say- ing: ‘* Shelreceived me with dignity, took my letter, read it deliberately, and then for the firat time looked at my face, at the same time extending her hand to me with charming frankness. In another moment I was perfectly at hoine, and forgot everything in the presence of this charming woman, for she is the most fascinating and homliest wo- man that I ever saw in my life. Her hus- band, Lewes, was there, and it was net long before I found myself comparing the couple te the princess and the dragon. Mr. Lewes sat glowering at me all the time I was there, but after a while I succeeded in forgetting his presenee and that he was, as far as could be, the husband of George Eliot, in intellect and genius the Queen of all England. [told her the changes I hid made in her story, particularly in the conclusien, which I had found necessary to alter wholly. The docu- ment, as I left it, made a really very strong dramatic effect, and the author of ‘‘Silas Martner’ acknowledged the im- provement and regretted, so she said, that she had not thougit of it herself. I talked with her three hours, and I was amazed, when I rose to go to see how the time had fied. I wasto call again the next day to

Meetings of the Tenantry.

A lan i meeting was held to-day in Con- nemara Mountains, at which several thou- sand persons attended. Davitt and Daly were pcesent. There was also a land meeting at Bohota at which there were 4,000 present.

John Bright, speaking at Birmingham yesterdey, reverted to the Irish question at length, and urged the Government to take energetie action for the relief of the suffer- ers in Ireland.

The \.ord Mayor has issued an appeal through the London press in behalf of the Mansion House relief committee, stating that the committee has no connection with any other organization and that it consists ef the r»presentatives of all creeds and of shades of politics, The appeal states that evidencs accumulates that there is scarcely a county in Ireland in which terrible privations gdo not exist in seme portions, though it is more severe in the Western Counties, and on northwest and southwest seaboards. The Lord Mayer fears that the public of London do not realize the gravity of the crisis, or that, unless prompt ssistancs be given, tens of thousands of people must die of starvation. The Lord Mayor states that £8000 have already been distributed out of £28.000 received ; but tha: is a mere drop in an ocean of need. He fears a recurrence of, the disaster of the year 1847 when abundant assist- ance was forthcoming, but toe late te save life.

The seats of eleven of the newly-elected Aldermen are to be contested.

It is said the Government will be asked to subsidize a line of steamers from St. John or Halifax to Aspinwall, connecting on the other side of the Isthmus with 4 line to 3ritish Columbia.
