The Magdalen Islands follow Anticosti with a cry of distress owing to the shoriness of the food supply. These thriftless fishing populations afford an immediate problem for economists. They are situated in the very inidst of the most productive fisheries in the world, Their whole business im life is to feed other countries with the abundance of the sea, and yet they have an inveterate habit of starving. The last mes- sage that comes to us with the fall consign- ments, and after all hope of communication except by telegraph is cut off for months, is that their only hope is in a short winter, and then the first news of spring is that they are suffering beyond help. Itis very patriotic of their member, Dr. Fortin, to introduce a bill by which thease hibernating fishermen of the isles shall be able to vote by telegraph. If he could devise any method for their emancipation from the traders who hold them in thraldom, and fer enforcing on them seme kind of providence, in view of the necessities of their families, he would do them better service. — Montreal Witness.

share in the house-keeping at home before they warry; let each superin- tend some department by tarns. it

Always Ready.

The late Sir Henry Havelock was an officer who in every way studied to do the best he could for the men under his care.

Amongst other good counsels, he im- plored them to be sober, setting them an example himself of great temperance. ‘** There is no such soldiers in the world,” he used to say, ‘‘as the British soldier, if he can be kept from drink.”

That he was successful in his endeavors, appears from the following incident chron- icled in his life. During the war with Burmah, in 1824, there was a sudden call on a certain corps to meet the enemy, then rapidly approaching ; but, alas! the men of that regiment were reported to be hope- lessly intoxicated and unfit for duty. Men must be found forthe emergency, however, and, after a moment’s consideration, the general ordered: ‘‘Call out Havelock’s saints ; they are never drunk, and Have- lock is always ready.” So the bugle sound- ed; the men were immediately under arms, cool and calm, and ready for action. The enemy were repulsed, and the credit of the British army saved.

Turkey's action will be perfectly legal, but it will be resisted by the populations on both sides of the moun- tains, in which case Ruesia must interfere, or tose all prestige with those for whose emancipation she made such sacrifices in 1877, and who wiil, her protection failing, rally to the Austrians, At present, this probable complication is the most disturb- ing factor of the European przzle.”

Polar Bears on Icebergs in the Atiantic.

Bostox, May 1.—The British steamer ‘*Glamorgan’’ arrived here this morning from Liverpool. On April 25th, in Iati- tude 46° 20’, longtitude 42° 30’ she passed an iceberg fully five hundred feet high, on which were a number of polar bears. At about-4a, m., on the 26th, she ran into a field of pack ice and icebergs. Chief officer May reveraed the engines and soon got clear. Arun of twenty miles was made to the southeast, when the ship was put on her course again. She steamed 160 miles on the southern edge of the ice- field, and during that time passed fully 100 large icebergs on which were seen polar bears.

Mr. Wm. J. Smyth residea at No. 1506 N. Seventh street, Philadelphia, Pa., end ‘ia well known in journalistic circles. He writes : I had an atiack of rheumatism in both of my knee jomts, and for several days I was alicst crezed with the intense pain caused by the disease.
