Although hi; friends were ‘in power, Davin sat with some twelve or fifteen other Conservatives to the left of the Speaker, with Liberals to, his right and Liberals behind him. Someone threw a heavy blue book which struck Davin on the head, stunning hiln momentarily. When the divi- sion figures were announced and the House was about to adjourn Davin rose and said he wished to call attention to something which had occurred during the recent de- bate. It was the most forcible thing that had come from the opposi- tion side.'It was a blue book which had reached his head, and speak- ing seriously, he doubted if langu- age too strong could be used in re- ference to the conduct of anyone who threw a missle of that kind. It; was simply a blackgusrdis trick. Davlrrs reproof was cheered by his friends. The Speaker, Hon. Peter White, commenting upon Dawn's remark, said: "I have only to say that I am entirely powerless to pre- vent these occurances unles the House sustaints me."

A spt-mimen of Dawn's caustic criticism let me quote his attack upon the government, and partiru- larly on Mr. Dewdney, minister of the interior. his sworn enemy. "What is it. Mr. Speaker," he said, “that I see before me? A govern- ment, it is true, but one which dele- gates its powers to the deputy min- lsters who rule it. Sir, 1 cannot fLll those empty skulls with brains. Men style them a ‘cabinet,’ but to my mind they are only a cabinet of antiques." This reminds me of an incident. of my youthful days. when Archie’ Scarr, a. notable soapbox orator in Yorkshire, addressing an audience on the town moor. was in- terrupted by some man in the audi- ence. "What's to say lad?" bellowed Archie" in the vernacular. The question was repeated rather to ‘Bean's disoomfiture, but he was equal tc the occasion. Pointing an accusing finger at the interrupter, he shouted, "Saay land, that knaws newt. I can g1‘ the arguments but I caant g1’ the braains to receive ‘cm

Speaking of his parliamentary career. I should mention that Davin had the honor of being the lender of the women's suffrage movement in Canada. He ftst brought up the subject in June, 1895, but it required twenty-two years of education, un- til long after Davin had passed away, before the right of Canadian women to have the vote was ack- nowledged. Loyal and effective ser- vice of the female sex during the Great War finally won for them the franchise. The Canadian law was passed by Parliament in i817.

Nicholas Flood Davin was n bril- liant man although the strain of erraticism was strongly engrained in his makeup. Indeed, it was this weakness which alone prevented him from attaining one of the most prominent positions in the political life of the Dominion, lt wns n delight. to hear him talk in his rich Irish tones, to listen to his recital of experiences as a war comspon- dent in the Franco-German wnr, and later of his early days in the West. Be had come to Canada in 1872. first working as an editorial write,- 0n the Toronto Globe and then later on_the Mail. Then he had gone to the prairie country and established the Regina Leader. It was through his newspaper connec- tion in the West that hc eventually became a member of the House of Commons.

When l-lon. Edgar Dewdney. who represented the neighboring consti- tuency of East Aasinlbola. was "ap- oointed minister of the interior in i888. Davin could not conceal his chagrin. So long as these two men were in the House together N‘ “alas Flood was a vertibio thorn in the flesh of the minister. He said things about his colleague which bordered on transgressions of the rules and observers often wondered how he succeeded in getting’ away with them. 1n his first election in 1887 Davin had a. majority of 303 votes. in 188i. 321. and then in i806 he eel-sped in by a maloritv of l. At the election of 1900 he was beaten by a young rival newspaper man of Regina, Walter Scott. destined, to become the first premier of the

years later. He never got, over his defeat by Scott, passing away under sad circumstances at Winnipeg in October, 1901. He died by his own hand.

Besides being a brilliant speaker, Davin was distinguished as a liter- fl-Pl! man. One of his outstanding words is “The Irlshmen in Canada." He also published a number of other works including‘ two or three volumes of poetry. As I stood be- side his grave a few Sundays ago, I pondered over the beautiful but not over extravagant inscription upon the tombstone which his friends had caused to be erected in his memory. It reads:

"In remembrance of Nicholas Flood Davin, ‘Esquire, barrister of the Middle Temple, London, Eng- land, and a. K.C. in Canada, who sat for West Asslnibola in the House of Commons of Canada from 1887 to 1900 and also sewed the Do- minion a; a journalist and man-of- letters. Bom at Kilfinune, County Limerick, Ireland, January 13. 1843. Died at Winnipeg, Manitoba. Octo- ber 18. 1901.

"This memorial has been erected by his former parliamentary asso- ciates and other friends as a lasting proof of the esteem and affection which ' they entertained for one whose character was strictly mark- ed by sincerity and fearlessness, chose comprehension, and whose dasslcal scholarship and wide cul- ture, united to.his brilliant oratory and singular wit, madehim promin- ent in debate and delightful in society." '

And then there is this striking quotation from Bulwer I/ytton:

"What". a world of hope may be b-riell in a single grave."

Yes, indeed!

The regular monthly meeting of the Glen Valley Women's Institute rnet at the home of Mrs. Willard MacDowell on Wednesday evening, January 8th. The meeting opened with the President in the chair by singing "Silver Threads Among the Gold", and repeating Creed in unl- son. Roll call was responded with a New Year resolution and was ans- wered by seven members. There was one visitor present. Minutes of the last meeting were read and ap- proved. Reports were given of the different committees and new ones were appointed as follows:

One new member was welcomed to the Institute. It was moved and seconded that a bill of seventy-five cents be paid. Plans for a social evening were discussed. 5t. Genevieve was born at Nau- terre. near Paris, about 422. She is credited, by her prayers and fast- ings, wlthhaving saved Paris from threatcned destruction by Attila in 451. She died Jan. 8, 512, known as the “Good Angel of Paris."

Gen- evieve onco saved Paris from starvation during a famine by her prayers and work-among the suf- fering citizens. Those fortunate enough to receive their loaves carry them as a token of good fortune and health.

Sea Birds Nest On Island Ledges

OTTAWA, Jan. 17~mch year tourists in growing numbers visit the Gaspc cod-st in the vicinity of Peroe Rock and Bonaventure island attracted largely by the thrilling spectacle provided by the thousands of sea-birds which nest 0n the great Rock and _on 0|: ledges of .the island. More visitors than ever before cam to this part of the pro- vince or Quebec in 1935 according to reports received by the Domin- ion Department of the Inferior and it is expected that an even, great- er influx of tom-isle will take place this year.

The Gaspc peninsula, in the east- ern part of Quebec, has a well-de- served and fast-growing reputation as a region of unusual attractions for summer visitors. The highest mountains in Elastcrn Canada are found in the peninsula, and their striking and rugged scenery, oom- bined with the beauty of an un- spoiled sea-shore and tho charm of the quaint, French fishing villages is largely l nsible for inducing many tourism to make the trip.

While the benefits of this tour- 1st traffic are generally distributed through the region, no community receives a larger share than the little village of Percc. situated at the very tip of the peninsula, in he shadow of Mount Salute-Anne. Peroe has a combination of attrac- tions for the summer visitor that is unique in eastern North Amer- ica .Not only has it the mountain and seaside scenery, dark forests, green pastures, quaint fisher-folk, historical associations, boating, fishing, bathing, and hiking, which it shares with many of its sister villages of the Gaspe region, but it has two special ornaments of superlative interest - the great Peroe Rock and the populous sea- fowl colony that nests on the top oi‘ the rock and on ledges on the face of the red sandstone cliff with which Bonaventure island, near Perce, fronts the sea.

Perce Rcck, with its sheer sides rising directly from the water for nearly three hundred feet, and its great arched passage way, eighty feet in span,‘ through which small boats may pass, has become well lmown to the public from photo- graphs and paintings. There is rlo- thing else like it on the Atlantic coast of this continent.

The thousands of sea-birds that nest on Peroe Rock and on Bolla- venture Island afford spectacles cults as striking and k thrilling to the visitor as the great rock itself. More than 12,000 gannets-great white birds as large as geese, with black wlng-tips-make their sum- mer homes here. Thousands of thorn looking at a distance like great

Fortunately, this interesting bird city is so situated that it may be observed and photographed con- veniently and in comfort without harming or disturbing its feathered citizens. Sea-going mutorboats make a specialty of carrying parties of

the ganncts nest. and there are ex- cellent points of vantage on solid land at the top of that cliff and on the crest of the mainland capo op- posite Pcrce Rock.

Bccogrlining the importance of this bird colony, both as a great nursery for seafowl and as a tour- ist attraction which brings well- earned income to the residents of the region, the Dominion Govern- ment and the Government of the Province of Quebec by joint action made it, many years 88°. a per- manent bird sanctuary. where birds may not be killed nor their eggs taken at any time. The colony has increased under these conditions and the streams of visitors that annuafly, by highway and railway, travel far to seeit now afford con- vincing evidence of th¢ wisdom of the action taken and of (me of the values of bird life in Canada under
