LETTER FROM MR. BUOTE.
Sir,—I challenge Elector (who turns outto be Mr. D. J. McCarthy, second vice President of the first polling division of the first electoral district of Prince) to é show that the convener appointed at the} couference at Charlottetown, last winter, hed in any way, auy more than by his owa vote, contributed ito the success of Mr. Pineau’s election. Mr. McCarthy refrains from the point, but instead gives out the names of several places where the con- vener held meetings to organize, but is very careful to say not one word of the proceedings of those meetings. He fur- ther states that I did net attend any of those meetings. True, and hundreds of Conservatives likewise. Why? you will ask. Because the advocates of the Liberal
Conservatives caure, in this district, are divided with two kinds. Onekind, to which I belong,
wish to impress the importance of the principles at stake with the determinason to carry the Conservative administration back to power. The other kind to which the convener and Mr. McCarthy belong, have for their platform the special eulogy of a few would be party bosses. Luckily for the Conservativ cause the latter class is sma'l in number.
We took to the principle above the man and no man is fit to be a leader when he is wanted to leaa who is not fit to be a follower when some one else is wanted to lead.
In 1898 when 38 out of 54 delegates did we the bonor to place their conttdence in me, to contest the district against Mr. Gallant, Mr McCarthy sould not vote for the Conservative candidate, but remained at home. ‘Ilheconvener voted, not how- ever before he had _ carried a series of re- solutions to St. Mary’s Hall, purporting to destroy what the Conservatives had com- pleted as the convention. Can the Con servatives party depeod on such electors. Not necessary to recall tbe strife which existed between the tried and true Conser- vativeof Tignish and some 13 (unlucky number) electors, who for personal reasous of their own woul? not vote for the Liberal ~ Conservative canilidate. Mr. McCarthy andI cannot agree on the point of offering flattery tO tne con- evner. Lam willing to leave it to those “wiser than we are”’—those who are wiser than we are msv find others “‘stili wiser” than they are and that proccs' may gocn ‘until it fiually results in fioding one | * wisest of aii” and that is public verdict.
