The football alternative

THIS GAME IS SILLY! A bunch of guys running up and down the field. Now what we need here is Water Polo! No, really. Think of it. The university could build us all a pool, it would probably

cost about the same as forty football -

jerseys, and then we would have another intervarsity sport that both men and women can play. Since water polo only consists ofa handful of players, the university would only have to buy a few pairs of briefs, a goal, and a rubber ball... Hey, they could just use a volleyball! This way, instead of having just forty people play one sport, they could have a team of ten or so...but, they could also use the pool to form an inexpensive swim team, play more intramurals, host swim meets. The list is endless. And even in the summer, where football jerseys and players don’t get much action, the pool could be a welcome home for many UPEI students.

| mean, like “ICEMAN” said, the NFL is on TV. You go home and see that. Water polo is never on TV... this would surely be a great change...and a less expensive one!

| would like to respond to a certain individual’s letter on school spirit here at U.P.E.1.. It seems that this person is quite ignorant in a few areas where he

obviously feels that he is quite knowledgeable.

| am a soccer player, and | am very proud to play for the Panthers. Soccer is the only team sport that | am interested in, and yet, you will find me Out supporting other Panther squads such as basketball, hockey, volleyball, rugby and field hockey. Why? Simply put, | am proud to go to U.P.E.I. and | like to show my support for our teams, no matter what | think of a particular sport. In short, you could say that | know what it means to possess pride in one’s school.

It would seem that some individuals don’t really understand what school spirit is all about. They would readily show support for one particular team, and not another. This is very hypocritical and odd to me. An institution is only as good, or bad, as the people attending, and the attitudes they bring with them. Some people’s attitudes here on campus are quite questionable and difficult to understand. Having lived on various parts of the globe, I can tell you that we are very fortunate to be able to attend such a school as ours. We have the potential to be one of the best universities in the country, and | believe we already are. We should be proud, even alittle bit arrogant, to say that we area student at such a unique university as U.P.E... Going to events of all sports, even if you don’t like the game, is an excellent way to show other universities how we feel about ourselves. | encourage everyone to go out and make some noise. Being a

varsity athlete, | can say that support.

from the student body is greatly appreciated, often giving us the extra motivation needed to defeat our Opponents. | must also address the somewhat bashing comment made about soccer. Generally, | have found that people dislike soccer for two main reasons: envy, and a lack of understanding. Soccer requires incredible conditioning combined with superb coordination, and mental sharpness. Many people are amazed at what a soccer player can do with a ball by only using their feet and heads. Some feel

frustrated and angry when they cannot ©

do the same, and so they tend to ignore the game. Others fail to see that much of the game is a mental contest between two teams, much like a fast-paced game of chess. Elite athleticism alone does not make a good soccer player, as a player must acknowledge that every touch of the ball has infinite consequences on the eventual outcome of the match, thus making the game an intellectual as well as a physical examination.

As far as its popularity goes, it’s the number one sport on the globe by far. The World Cup is an international tournament held every four years. This is the biggest sporting event there is, even bigger than the Olympics. It is being held this year in the U.S., and the final game of this month-long tourney is expected to be watched on T.V. by a world wide audience of over a billion

‘people. So, if you don’t enjoy watching

Slimy stereotype? X-Press,

There is a new poster on campus designed to raise awareness about sexual harassment against women. The poster has a rather large detailed picture of an earthworm and the caption reads, “For some life forms...sexual harassment is not an issue.” | see the decision to use an image of an earthworm as a deliberate attempt by the creators of this poster to compare men to the lowly earthworm in an unfavourable light. Ostensibly, the joke is that the worm is neither male nor female and therefore is exempt from sexual harassment. Besides being a weak joke, the image of the worm feeds the stereotype that most men primitively seek sex. It also discounts the possibility that those

men who do harass women could have tragic histories which ultimately result in the victimization of women.

The group who decided to advertise with this image must have been aware of the various ways this poster could have been interpreted, and | would like to know why they undermine their own just cause with such mindless action. | realize there is a lot of pent-up rage on the part of women who try to make a good living in male-dominated professions and are confronted with sexual harassment; however, there has to be less rage on public display in order for their claims to be constructive. Nobody, but nobody, likes a bad attitude.
