The Liberal party is professedly a free trade party-and, in theory, sticks to the name, its prac- tices to the contrary notwithstanding. The Toron- to Globe, the other day, while combatting the pro tcctive policy of the Meighen Government argued that “under Sir Wilfrid Laurier the manufacturers of Canada were prosperous.”

The Globe did not remind its readers that un- der the so-called “free trade” of the Laurier regime the manufacturers enjoyed an average protective Larifi of 28 per cent, whereas they are, under the present government struggling along tinder a protec tive tariff of a little over 22 per cent. Under the former regime the annual revenue required was somewhere about one hundred million dollars; to - day we need more than four times as much, yet the Globe and papers of its ilk raise a howl about the iniquity of a tariff that has been reduced to less than twenty three per cent, while extolling the prosperity enjoyed under a.“free trade" policy which protected Canadian producers with a tariff 0f twen ty eight per cent. V

The insincerity 0f the present “free trade” Lib- » crul policy, with its transparent vote catching appeal to the farmers, is too apparent for further deception It will 110i: do to call a 28 per cent tariff’ free trade and a 23 per cent tariff a ruinous protective one.
