The Canadian parliament will be in session while the discussion on the United States revision is in progress 1n congress. and before prorogation the government will be faced with the economic challenge from the United States.

If the United States revision is as injurious to Canada as expected, it is i difficult to sce how the government at Ottawa. can prorogue parliament without taking some action. To do so would be a complete surrender on the part of the administration. and a justification of the United States op- inion that Canada would not resent any action taken by congress, even to the extent of making the dominion ,‘ an economic appendage of the repub- jlilc. Then IIIVO long been complaint: that Canadian hard wheat when transported over American ‘routes and shipped at American ports to British or other European markets, has been mixed with soft or inferior American wheat somewhere on the way and sold as all Canadian wheat. Much American wheat is shipped to Europe by way of the St. Lawrence and from the port of Montreal and it has recently transpired that the same dishonest and fraudulent mix- ing has been going on at that port for an indefinite timepast.

British mlllers have complained that Canadian hard wheat does not grade up to its former standard. All the time Canadian wheat-growers have suffered heavy loss, and Can- adlan Government inspectors at Mon- trecl have been charged with a guil- ty knowledge, if not with actual par- tiolpation in the fraud. 1r the charges are true the situation ap- pears to be intolerable. A searching investigation is called for.

Ten years ago Canada. and Argen- tina were about equal in population; now the southern Republic has elev- en millions of people and the Do- minion abouVnine and a. quarter millions. Both countries are dis- tlcntly agricultural and produce vast harvests of grain. Canada has de- veloped manufacturing industry to a much greater extent than Argentina. United Empire, the journal of the Royal Empire Society in its la t issue tells that outside of the British Dominions Ar- gentina is the third largest custom- er of Great Britain and commercial- ly "has never disguised its pro-British leanings." In a letter to the Nautical Mugazlne, Captain D. J. Munro. whose opinions in such matters are highly valued. says. "lt will assist communication between the Far East and London, reducing the distanoe- from 10,000 miles by the Suez. Canfll and 11,000 by San Fran- cisco to 8,000 via Prince Rupert. The possibilities by this route for the British ‘Empire are immense, and are only to be compared with the advent of the Suez and Panama Canals. with the exception that it is all within the British Empire."

A British physician, who was for-

merly a. druggist or pharmacist, has invented a machine that puts the matter of diagnosing and treating your ailment entirely in. your own hands; you are your own doctor. He has invented a machine re- sembling a typewriter but at present it has but twenty keys. Each key has a letter and ch letter represents a symptom. '

Each ordinary ailment of everyday life has three main symptoms. If therefore a customer could tell the pharmacist these three symptoms the machine would deliver the goods.

Dr. Burnet. the inventor, gave a practical demonstration of the machine, which prescribed for sev- eral common ailments. The prescrip- tions were handed to the audience (pharmacists) and caused astonish- ment and musement.

When_you remember that a. head- ache can have thirty or more causes a pain in the back at least as many, a pain in abdomen may be due to gall stones, kidney stones, appendi- citis, gas pressure, intestinal‘ stop- page, and many other conditions. chest pain may be pleurisy, aheai-t at- tack, or a simple cold in the outer muscles of the chest, you can read- ily see how unwise the use of such a machine would be. ‘

A Monument To Gordon. ‘

To-thc comrades .of General Gor- don now scattered in all parts of the world, an appeal has been lent forth by Sir John Mafley, governor-gener- al of the British Sudan. for funds to provide a memorial in his honm‘. The sum asked for is $300,000. It is Dm- posed to dedicate the Khartum cat- hedral to him as well as a church‘ at Port Sudan and other edifices at At- bara and other points throughout the Nile valley where he has become al- most a deity. We cannot ,, that the amount asked for is sufficient to complete this grandiose scheme, nor can we suppose that there survive a great ihany of Gordon's old comrades in arms. But there can be little ques- .tlon of the enthusiasm of those sur- vivors, perhaps since Napoleon, there never was a general who so captivat- ed the imaginations and loyalty of the men who served under him as “Chinese" Gordon. Even in the ex- traordinary portrait of him that Lyt- ton Starchey has given, the essential heroism of the man was not challeng- ed". He remains a kind of military Don Quixote who strayed down in- to the nineteenth century._

Died at the Right Time.

Gordon died 44 years ago, after be- ing shut up in Khartum for tori months. The relieving army was but two days’ march away when the fan- atical Dervishes broke in upon Gor- don and he fell on their spears just as he was leaving his office in the early morning. It was I3 years later before he was avenged by Kitchener at Omdurman. While Gordon's death was tragic and thrilled and shocked the Britishnatlon as have few mili- tary dlsasters, it was not unfittlng._It secured him in a fame that might have passed from him had he lived to return to England. In the end he might have been as small a figure as Admiral Dewey who for some frantic months was thb idol of the American nation. The time for heroes to die is at the moment of their greatest triumph. Nelson knew the trick. So did Wolfe "and Montcalm.

He next saw service under Ismail Pasha, khedivc of EBYDt, and su - pressed‘ the slave trade. For t is achievement he was made governor- general of the Sudan. The sluvers were cleaned out and the fanatical Dervishes driven from all the oases. Home on vacation he accepted a P051- tion as private secretary to the Mar- quis of Ripon, newly appointed Vice- roy of India. An opportunity for the exercise of his unique talents spring- ing up in China, he was lent to the Chinese government as military ad- viser. In I883, however. he was back in Egypt to rescue the Sudanese from cBritlsh government had ordered the khedive to abandon the Sudan and Gordon was told not to fight but to arrange for the return of as many Sudanese as possible. He sent whole villages to safety and might easily have escaped himself. Instead he dc- laycd too long and found himself hemmed up in Khartum with a handful of Sudanese. \

An Eminent Victorian.

Gordon really wanted to fight, and some have supposed that he delayed purposely knowing that the British government would be forced to send an army to rescue him. But Glad- stone procrastlnated for nine months. evidently expecting Gordon to rescue himself or something. Such a storm of public opinion arose in Exigland that at last an expedition under Sir Garnet Wolseley set forth for’ Khar- tum. When he was two days’ march away he learned that Gordon had been betrayed and butchered Sir John Maffey does not unduly praise General Gordon when ‘he writes of him as a. man, “who at all times and everywhere gave his strength to the weak, his substance to the poor, his sympathies to the suffering. his heart to God."
