Fire completely gutted the storey and a half frame house of Mr. Preston Sorrey, Montague, ear- ly yesterday morning. The fire- men quickly responded to the alarm given about 4.20 am., by Mr. Fred Vuozzo. who first noticed the smoke. One-hundred and ten students assembled at Montague High School yesterday to begin the four- day session writing the entrance examinations to P.W.C.

They are using four rooms in the school. two on the main floor and two In the basement. Dr. C. J. Murphy. Ph.D., professor at P. W. C., is conducting the examina- tions. Assistants are Willard Bre- haut, John Hughes. Mrs. Elsie Wattcrworth and John Yeo. The entrance examinations will con- clude on Thursday.

Dr. C. J. Murphy is also con- ducting the Grade Eleven exam- inations which get underway to- dav.

There are 23 students writing examinations.

Annual District tccnvention of W.I. At lleatlierdale Hall

..'Brooklyn Women's Institute was the entertaining Institute at .the W. I. annual district. conven- tion which took place in Heath- erdale Hall on Tuesday after- noon and evening, June 16.

The chair was occupied by the president, Miss Margaret. Mac- Pherson, and the general business was attended to by the secretary, lMrs. Arthur MacKinnon. To open the meeting, all repeated the ”In- Istitute Ode", and the "Club wo- men's Creed.” Roll call followed and the minutes of the meeting held In Whim Road last year were read.

The institutes represented at the convention were Heatherdale.Mill- town, Valleyfleld. Upper Montague, Grandview, Bcllevuc, Whlni Road. Caledonia, Kilmulr and Brooklyn. Heatherdale, having the largest number of members present was awarded a prl7.e, accepted by their secretary, Miss Louise Brehaut. The resolutions committee ap- pointed was as follows: Mrs. M. N. MacGowan. Kllmuir; Mrs. Wil- lard Bruce. Brooklyn, and Mrs. Webb Nicholson, whim Road. The district convention will be held In Milltown next year with Mrs. J. King as president and Mrs. Wm. Kemp as secretary. The following were also appointed to the execu- tive board for 1953: Kllmiur, Mrs. E. Farquharson and Mrs, Colin MacDonald: Valleyfield, Mrs. Alex Martin and Mrs. C. Nlckcrson: Upper Montague, Mrs. Roy Gillis and Mrs. Raymond Nicholson; Bellevue, Mrs. Stewart MocPhcr- son; Whim Road, Mrs. M. J. Mun- ro and Mrs. George Clarcy; Grand- vlew, Mrs. Robert MacFhec; Cale- donia, Mrs. Alan Cameron and Mrs. Angus MacDonald; Brooklyn, Mrs. Robert Whiteway and Mrs. Preston Benton.

After the appointment. of of- ficers for I952, the president intro- duced the first speaker, Miss Verna Darrach, who spoke on the re- cruitment of studcnta for the nurs- ing profession. Miss Darrach spoke on behalf of Miss Muriel Arctu- bald, who was unable to attend the convention.

The gifts were opened by Miss Margaret MacPhi-rson and the acronipiinying verses read by

Mrs. Willard Bruce. An original and humorous poem with much good advice for it happily mar- rled life together was read by Mrs. Preston Benton.

The evening was spent In dan- cing with music by Miss Flor- ence M:icK,innon, violin, and Mr. Kenneth MacPhce, guitar. A dance by little Carol Matheson was a highlight of the evening. Lunch was served and at a late hour everyone joined in wishing Lillian and Alcxandcr many years of happiness.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bull:-r, Mill- Iown, also entertained for Mr. and Mrs. Whlteway at a miscel- laneous shower on June 13th when they were the recipients of many lovely gills which were opened by Miss Joan Nicholson and the verses read by Miss Nor- lan Nicholson.

Bruce delighted the audi- ence wlth several numbers. The accompanist was Mrs. Colin Mac- Donald of Kilmulr.

J. MacPherson, Miss Louise Brchaut, Mrs. H. Behm, Mrs. H. Carver and Mrs. Wm. Kemp.

Mrs. Julian Herring spoke on a number of topics, the organization of district conventions. the In- stitute radio program. the Tweeds- mulr competition, and told her own personal story of how she first joined the Women's Institute and became Interested In its work. At the conclusion of Mrs. Herring's talk, a vote of thanks was extend- ed to her by Mrs. E. Farquharson, seconded by Mrs. John A. Mac- Pherson.

After a delightful program, A sliver collection was taken up at the latter part of the evening which was to be divided evenly between the Leadership course and the nurseir residence of Klara County Hospital.

Mrs. Murdock MacGowan brought down the report of the resolution committee, and the meeting was concluded with the lNatIonal Anthem.
