The Women's Institutes

The thirty-sixth annual convention of the Prince Edward Island Women's Institutes, which opens tomorrow in the Prince of Wales College hail, will be attended by delegates from all sec- tions of the Province and will include discus- sions on such important topics as education and social welfare, public health, citizenship, home economics, handicrafts, art, music and litera- ture. Nothing, indeed, which touches upon the betterment of the community is alien to the in- terests of our Women's institutes and those who have attended their conventions in the past are aware of the wide range of their activities.

Of special interest will be the public meet- ing an Friday evening, which will be addressed by Mrs. Raymond Sayre, President of the Asso- ciated Countrywomen of the World, an internation- al organization with which the Women's Insti- tutes are affiliated. A native of Iowa, a farm wife and mother of four children, Mrs. Sayre is regarded as one of the busiest women in the U. S. A. She was elected president of the A. C. C. W. at Amsterdam in i947, but previous to that had attended other meetings of that organiza- tion in Washington, London and Canada. She has served as a member of the National Cam- mission on UNESCO, representing the American Federation of Farm Bureau, and is a member of numerous other organizations, b-oth state and national. She went to Germany last March un- der the auspices of the Educational and Cultural Relations Division of the office of the Military Government of the U. S. A. to appraise the sta- tus of German women and to study rural volun- fury associations of German farm women and community life.

To our citizens generally, members of the Women's institutes are always welcome visitors and it is hoped that they will spend anienjoyable as well as profitable time in convention here this week.

A Great Editor Passes

The late Mr. P. D. Ross, president of the Ottawa Journal, who died yest-erday at the mature age of ninety-one, was an outstanding ‘figure in Canadian journalism. He started the Journal almost from scratch sixty-three years ago, and built it into one of the best papers on the continent. He was‘a pioneer in cooperative newspaper enterprise in Canada, and one of the founders of the Canadian Press as a national news organization. '

Most significant factor in Mr. Ross's success- ful career was that he was a newspaper man first, last and all the time. He believed in the old adage that a shoemaker should stick to his last, and that a journalist was of more value to his paper and his community by attending to his own business. Others could bask in the lime- light, and "take the bows"; Mr. Ross preferred to serve anonymously, throwing his weight whole- heartedly into activities far the public weal in his editorials which were recognizable by their pungent style, but not otherwise. Characteristic of him was the modest title, "Reminiscences of‘ a Newspaper Person", which he gave to his enter- taining autobiography published some years ago.

Mr. Ross has left an enduring monument in the newspaper to which he devoted his long and arduous life, and in the affection and esteem of his subscribers and fellow craftsmen throughout Canada.

An Impressive Achievement

With little fanfare, the Western Powers’ air ferry service into Berlin completed a full l2 months of operation last week, observes the Montreal Star. Recent developments have taken the airlift out of the spotlight, but it is worth while to mark its first birthday with some reflec- tions on what it achieved.

it seemed a year ago as if the cold war about which we were hearing so much was about to turn into a war of weapons instead of words. The Russian action in cutting off Berlin, ‘as it then seemed, from all communication with the West, on its face presented the United States, Britain and France with the equally unacceptable alternatives of either carrying out a humiliating retreat or subjecting the two and one-quarter million Berliners in their sectors to privations worse than anything they had endured during the war. Not to mention a third alternative, that of forcing the blockade with the natural risks that would attend such a decision.

it seemed impossible that by air transpor- tation alone two-thirds of Berlin could be kept alive through a winter against whose rigors it was ill-sheltered. The world was scoured for car- go planes, an incredibly efficient traffic- organi- zation was put together and the essentials of life began pouring in an ever-growing stream into the German capital, to bolster its inhabi- tants in their determination not to submit to Russian pressure and at the same time to hearten tha rest of Western Europe with on impressive demonstration of Western firmness and techni- cal efficiency. -

An impressive list of statistics was compiled. Nearly two millions tons of supplies were sent in, in an operation that was kept up around the clock in all kinds of weather. The cost at the

Schools are crowded enough in Canada to- day but the Dominion Bureau of Statistics pre- dicts that by i953 there will be 600,000 pupils added to the current enrolment of about 1,800,- 000 in elementary schools, and a further need for some 18,000 additional teachers-all as a result of the high birth rate in the 1940s, immi- gration and better facilities for getting the chil- dren to school.

The political fortunes of the Provincial Pro- gressive Conservatives are at a low ebb when they allow two vacancies out of three to go without a contest. They will have to get new young blood into their membership and the best way to do that is to follow the example of the Federation of Agriculture — organize and advertize. Elec- tions are not won by merely praying that some- thing will flrn up to provide success. The Di- vine Book's prescription is plain and explicit- work and pray, the emphasis being on work.

Th-e' world famous Bodleian Library at Ox- ford has just received a gift which is regarded as beyond price. It is a bequest of I00 medieval manuscripts mad-e by a retired London solicitor, Mr. Lyell. He directed in his will that a choice should be made from his library which contains about 250 such manuscripts. He expressed the wish that historical interest and importance should be a factor to determine the selection of those which ore to go to the Bodleian. The choice has already been made and this acquisi- tion to the Bodleian's unique collection is thl largest for more than one hundred years. Those which will be of greatest value to scholars have been chosen from Mr. Lyell's library. During his lifetime he permitted research workers full ac- cess to it. it was his wish that after his death they should continue to enjoy this privilege.

"On Wednesday last there were exhibited in the field near the Gov- ernment House, such foals of Ron- cesvalles as had been entered for the produce of Stakes to be run for ln 1829. We have seldom seen a flner or more gratifying sight- eleven foals were exhibited, all of them displaying much bone, sym- metry nnd blood, and shawlng the great improvement which ls rapid- ly tnklng place 1n the breed of our horses.

"There were three colt foals bred by Mr. Bracken, Major Lane, and the Attorney General, which up- penred the favorites, and a numbcr of promising fillies-one of them bred by Mr. Hadgsop, though small. was much admired. Union President Amassed A Million

Before he died ln 1048 at. the age of 66, Maj. George Leonard Berry, president of the 75,000- member Printing Pressmens Un- ion. bud amassed a million or two. He owned a bank and helped direct two. more, farmed about 30,000 acres of good Tennessee earth, published a daily newspap- c-r, and was president of a color printing plant. The man who was orphaned at 6, remained an illit- erate until 16, and lived among other things, by prizeflghflng and washing dishes before he became a union president. at 25 had a sim- pie explanation: "God has been very good lo me.“
