INTERESTING LETTER FROM THE KENT MILLS COMPANY.

The regular quarterly meeting of The Charlottetown Board of Trade was held in the Masonic building Jast evening, the Vice President, Mr .W. H. Aitken, in the chair,

After the reading of the minutes of last meeting and also the minutes of the meet- ing of Council authorizing a delegation of the Board to proceed to Ottawa,—

Mr. Aitken, as one of the members of the delegation, reported that the President, Mr. Horace Haszard,and he had gone to Ottawa,

and been promptly given an audience | with five of the Ministere viz., Sir Richard Cartwright, Sir Louis Davies, Hon. Mr,

Fielding, Hon. Mr. Fisher and Hon, Mr. Blair. Two matters of importance were d.scussed at this meeting, viz, that ofa | second winter steamer and that of direct | steam communication between this Pro- vince and Great Britain.

As to the firet, Mr. Haszard represented strongly that the need of a second winter steamer was yearly becoming more and more apparent. It was pointed out that if an accident should happen to the Stanley, life as well as property might be at stake and a large and increasing traffic stopped. | the Ministers were surprised to learn that | the winter business of the Stanley was so large and that the Sianley, if given credit

| for the mattis which sbe carries, is not costing the Government anything for winter service; and they promised to take the matter of another winter steamer into their serious

consideration. From tbe faet that Captain Finlayson and Mr. William Welsh had been simultaneously invited by the Gov~ ' ernment to go to Ottawa, Mr. Aitken in- ferred that tney were now doing so. Afier their return home, & memorial of the Council of the Board had been forwarded to Ottawa and in response to it, the President bad received from Sir Louis Davies an atsurance that he had laid the statement before the Premier, and Ministers of Finance and Trade and Com-~ perce to enable them the more satisfact- ory tO arrive at aconclasion with ref erence to a second winter sleamer.

As to direct *teamship communica- tion between tbis Province avd Great tritain, the Minieters bad after talking the matter over, assured the delegation that measures would be taken t© secure the supply of an ocean steamship five trips during the coming season tor the purpore of esteblisbing a direct trade betweeu this Province and the Mother Country, and that means would be adopted to maintain it if

Deak Sin,—We are just in receipt of copy of annual report of your Board of Trade fcr 1897, aud for which we tlank you very much, great deal] of information and must open up the eyes of many of us in this western country. Although the writer bas had the pleasure of visiting your Island on two or three occasions, must now confess | had no idee as to the extent of the Ieland’s production. From your report it is evident you are growing a large quantity of wheat, as well as your usual large yield of oats and potatoes, also that you produce a good deal of bay, and are paying a good deal of attention to fruit; these, with che large amount of cheese you are turning out, must make avery bandsome income to your farmers, ard should advance your land in value.

You are to b* congratulated on the high standing you have obtained in your butter and cheese, and there is great credit due to your people on the Island that tbey have gone at thie business in such a scientific, careful, way.

Your bog product is really a wonder to the people here in tue weet; when you talk of one factery handling 500 hogs per day, you make uacompare your Island with rome of our western American States, and it looks se if in the near future your farms ers would produce the requirements of your courtry and keepthe:r money at home instead of paying it out for export goods.

We aleo notice with pl-asure ¢hat your income from the. eyster, lobster ard fivh catch is well up to the average.

We also notice your request that & second Government steamer should be provided for the Island, and we quite agree with your views,as it would be a very serious matter for your Province, as well as the rest of the Dominion, should any~ thing happer to the SS. Stanley, as that is the only winter Communication we pow have with your Province, and we would be very glad to see the Goverament pro- vide a second steamer. The other Pro- vinces are having large expenditures male by the Bominion, and we thick you are entitled to, at least, have a second steamer, which is as much for the Dominior as for yourselves.
