The great objection to the emplorment of women is undoubtedly their inability to stand physical strain. This is recognized in arather curious way ir a regulation re- centiy adopted for the appointment of women clerks in the provincial post offices in Great Britain. The positions are award- ed by competitive examination, and a standard of inches has also been establish ed. Girls of fifteen will not be accepted under 5 feet, of sixteen under 5 feet 1 inch, and of eighteen under 5 feet 2 inches. It is not # very severe test, but it is severe enough to exclude a good many girls, and as illustrating @ tendency itis significant.

A PIFFICULT PASSAGE, Mr. B. B. Blizard, of St. John, N. B., agent forthe J. & J. Tay'or, safe worka, Toronto, is in town to-day. Mr. Blizara on Tkursday crossed between the Capes from P. E. I. He says there were six passengers including one lady. There werecrews of sixty men and five boats, and the crossing was the longest and worst for over 30
years, occupying 11 honrs. It was just dark when the boats reached the border ice, and had they been a very
short time later the passengers and crews would pave had to remain on the ice all night. The trouble in crossing arose from the effects of the gale and snow storm the day preceeding. The ice was in the first place covered with a foot of soft snow, and had been broken up by the force of the gale and had been piled all the way across in hills or bunches of fifteen feet high. There was no smooth ice, and at places the crews would sink in lolly up to their necke. It will be readily recoguized that the cross- ing was a very severe ove. There was @ special train waiting at Cape Tormentine for the passengers and they were quickly taken to Sackville on landing.—Moucton Trapscript.
