ANOTHER CAPACITY HOUSE The repeat performance of "Meet Shane For A Change" presented by the Benevolent Irish Society at the Holy Redeemer Community Centre last evening before anoth- er largc audience, proved highly entertaining and in keeping with the opening night. The regular monthly meeting of the Prince Street Home and School Asociation was held last evening in the assembly hall.

A very enjoyable musical pm- gram under the capable direction of Miss Lillian MacKenzie, was Presented by the pupils of Grades V and VI.

After some discussion a motion was made to purchase cod-liver oil capsules from the Red Cross to be distributed to the pupils of Grades I to VI.

Col. Lowtlier introduced the guest speaker. Mrs. Gordon Mac- Donald, president of the Provincial Home and School Association. who gave a very interesting account, outlining the highlights, of the national Home and School meet- ing which she attended in Toronto.

Mr. Ernest Worth moved a vote of thanks to Mrs. MacDonald and after the singing of the Queen.l the meeting adjourned to the low-l er hall for refreshments.

Mr. MacKinnon then recalled that the company had to mount numerous obstacles before they were uble to put one ferry in operation. ''I went to Ottawa on delegntions eight times and met with nothing but frustration." he stated. "The railway was at the back of the whole thing."

"Premier Jones asked the Fed- oral Government not to nntlonal- in this service." stated Mr. Mac- Kinnon. "The matter is going be- fore the Maritime Commlaion at Ottawa in n short time.

"I hope that some private enm- pnny will hold on to the service. If anyone thinks there is a dollar in it and will carry on the service without increasing the rats: he can have my share in the busi- ness for less than I paid," stated the Minister.

Speaking on agriculture he stat,- ed that the farmer should tramp along cautiously and grow enough of each product so that he would have something to sell for what- ever was in demand. He stated that he did not want to set himself up as an expert but he advised that farmers should not throw down one phase of production and jump into another because there hap- pened to be more mony in it at the time.

He stated that the Federation, after showing a. little trend towards socialism at the start. was getting down to good, solid ground as evidenced by the brief they pre- sented to the Legislature yesterday. He suggested that the Depart- ment of Agriculture should assist in the setting up of auction sates for cattle so that farmers who wanted to get into purebred stock would have a central place where they could do their own selecting.

Mr. Macxinnon stated that Minister of Industry and Natural Resources (Hon. Eugene Cullen) had done more for the economy of the Province than anyone re- alizes. "Tlie results of the drag- gcr fishing wlthiii the past two years justify every edort Mr. Cul- ion has put into the draggers." he stated.

He recalled that a leading hor- ticulturalist had stated that this Province was better adapted to the growth of small fruits, apples and vegetables than any other part of America.

"The trouble is that. we need a market although we go into our own stores and find all kinds of imported goods on the shelves," he said.

He suggested that more Island money should be invested in Is- land enterprises. The Minister re- called that the canning factory in Charlottetown proved a very prof- itzible busincm but it was bought out by American interests and closed up. thereby throwing a lot of City people an of work.

"There was enough money in this City invested in minerals in other Provinces to buy that plant otit ten times over." he started. "our people should invest more in their own business at home."

He predicted a bright future for the eastern end of the Province as the result of the developments in fisheries and condemned the parctlce of poaching. "I think that if the size limits of lobsters were gradually extended we wouldn't have any trouble in get- ting the lobsters up to the size where half of them would be mar- ketable," he stated.

Brief Stresses Prospects For Food Processing

The great possibilities for de- veloping fresh froun foods in this Province were pointed out in the annual brief presented to the Les- lslnturs by the Federation of Agriculture yesterday. It WI! noted that cash crop: al'O both n desirable and necessary adjunct to livestock taming and expressed the belief that a wider variety of cash crops can be produced here and marketed successfully.

The brief also stated that the Island is well suited to the pro- duction of various fruits and vegetables which if properly pro- cessed and marketed in an order- ly -way can add substantially to the total income. The brief states "When it is realized that the Mari- time Provinces have been import- ing 75 per cent of the canned and frozen fruits and vegetables con- sumed. and there is a market in other area: for certain of these products there would appear to be very real possibilities for such a development."

One important danger to such a program was pointed out in the brief when it stated, "noweven! there is no advantage to ouri farmers in growing in crop which; cannot be marketed and. in this instance. marketing will dependl upon the provision of adequate freezing and processing facilities. an undertaking which it appears. will require public support." I

Strong opposition to the intro-, duction of Daylight Saving Time in the cities and Towns of

the Federation of Agriculture when its president, Mr. Roland MacDonald. presented the annual brief to the Provincial Legislature. The brief noted that conditions were not the same here as in big cities where workers might have to spend two hours a day travel- ling back and forth to work. The brief specifically stated, "It is our opinion that the advocates of Day- light Saving Time in' this Province are confusing their wants and their needs and that the only rea- son that can be advanced in favor of the change is the one that other large centers adopt it; not a sound reason for ordering the agricultural affairs of the Province.
