While Cousin Reddy de- y pends on running away from those who chase him. and on his wits to trick them successfully, Cousin Gray doesn't depend on his legs so much; he depends on the friendly trees.

It happened one morning, that Gray Fox was over in that part of the Green Forest that adjoins the Old Pasture. There was a sharp bark, then a whine, and another bark over in the Old Pasture. There was a Dog over there. He was over there hunting, some- thing he had no business to be doing at that time of year. He had found the trail of Reddy Fox. Now mid-summer is no time to do a lot of hard running. Reddy Fox doesn't mind a good run in cool weather..but he had no desire to run on such a warm morning as was this one. 'So he decided to get rid of this bothersome Dog as soon as possible. He headed straight for the Green Forest. He would go over to Laughing Brook where it comes down through the Green Forest and break his trail in the water.

It just happened that he headed straight for the place where Cous- in Gray was. The latter started to run. He wanted to llet HWRY from that neighborhood as quick-
