passage in 12 days.

-Mutra.—Four artillery guns of this dis- trict are to be sent to Kingston Military Academy. They will be replaced by guns of larger calibre. Their passage through the streets to-day excited some curiosity.

Tue Patriot reports Mr. Sinclair's speech at Clifton to the length of nearly four columns. To the speeches of Pope, Breck- en, McGill, Campbell and Moore it devotes about a quarter of acolumn. Is this fair or unfair !

Sr. James Cuurcn.—The Rev. D. M. Gordon, B. D., of St. Andrew’s Church. Ottawa, is expected to occupy the pulpit of the above church on Sunday next at Ll a.m., and the Rev. Thomas Duncan, of St. An- drew’s Church, Halifax, on the same day at 6.30 p.m.

Ix the market to-day we were shown by Mr. James Lewis, of St. Clare, a bunch of very nice turnips which were grown in his garden the present season. They are fully developed and looked very nice. Mr. Lewis had also some good-sized carrots for sale to-

To-pay being “The Twelfth,” an Orange demonstration and Tea was held at Milton. At ten o'clock, the members of the city Lodge, numbering about two hundred —in- cluding a lodge of Young Britons— marched in regalia from the lodge to the Railway Station. The procession headed by Gal- braith’s Band, passed down Queen and along Water Streets to the Railway Station, escorted by a platoon of twelve Policemen. It was geen an admired by many. There was ho excitement. At the Station the procession was joined by many more citi- zens.

Mr. Ancus McMittan’s San Francisco correspondent writes him as follows: I am pleased to be able to inform you that your ship “‘Gondolier” made one of the fastest runs on record between Newcastle, New South Wales and Yokahama, Japan. She made the passage in 33 days, which has never been done before.” We are always

The Orangemen have decided not to walk in procession to-day. They will walk on Tuesday next—the anniversary of Hackett’s funeral.

Berury, July 11. Emperor William’s physicians have is- sued another long statement in regard to his condition. They attribute His Ma- jesty’s relatively slow progress towards re- covery to the great loss of blood; and his appetite, owing to the shock to his system, the mental depression,his attainable degree of strength is not yet regained. His power of locomotion is small, his hands are help- less, and he can only eat with assistance. Manrip, July 11. The Minister of Finance intends to defer the issue of the Cuban loan of 125,000,000 piastres.

BERLIN, July 11.

The session of Congress to-day lasted four hours and fifteen minutes. Lord Beacons- field was again absent. The reading of the treaty was completed, only a few immaterial points are left for settlement on Saturday. There will be no sitting on Friday in order to allow time for the preparation of the treaty.

A telegram from Sydney, Australia, dated the 11th, states that two tribes of natives have risen against the Government on the island of New Caledonia and

. Durine the past year the St. Dunstan’s Cathedral has been entered many times and candlesticks, lamps, cloths and various articles taken therefrom. The surroundings of the Cathedral were watched, but no trace of the thief could be found. Yesterday evening two young ladies entered the Cathedral about dusk and found a suspicious looking individual in the sanctuary rolling up one of the white altar cloths. They =—— informed the sexton of the matter.

THERE is yet another serious blunder to record in the legislation of the Davies Cab- inet. The Registration of Voters’ Act is a confused mass of ill-digested matter. Be- fore Judge Alley’s Court here on Monday, it was argued that voters in this city who did not pay their poll tax before the 18th of June, the day on which the sittings of the Court began, are disfranchised, and can no longer be placed on the lists of voters for the ensuing Dominion elections. This is a charming stroke of policy. The Davies fac- tion know the strength of the Conservative vote in Charlottetown, and the law has been so curiously worded that many Conserva- tives are struck off. Should Judge Alley confirm the objection raised in his court it will be for the Government to call an im- mediate session of the House in order to rectify their defective legislation—that is to

say, if our ministers want to escape the im- putation of having purposely contrived this disgraceful trap to catch their opponents. — | Herald.
