THE PATRIOT AND MK.MATTHEWS,

Sir,—In the Guardian of the 15th inst. there was a denial by the Rev. Mr. Turner of Mr. Matthews being concerned iu a row which tock place in 1895, and ended by his being denominated a Christian gentle- man. This was copied into the Patriot without comment, and I am surprised at the editor, for he should know better.

Let hima turn up his paper of March 7th 1895, and one or two later numbers,and he will discover his own account of the trial

The facts, as given by the Patriot, are that the Rev. Mr. Baker was conducting meet- ings inacertain schoolhouee and that after the meeting came out the people were attacked and a rict took place. One of those who were hurt, I am told, will uever get over his injuries.

At the trial of the rioters, Mr. Warbur- ton prosecuted and Mr. Good &cted for defence. Some of the attacking parties were fined, among whom was Matthews. Another Matthews ran away, and has not since been on the Island, as if caught the magistrates at the time would probably have senthim to the Supreme Court. Would it not be in order forthe Patriot man to apologize either to Matthews, if he belied kim, or to the public. whom he now appears to deceive.

Whether the above was the _reason for the dismissal of Matthews from the prose- cutorship for Queen’s County, Ido not know at present; but that it qu.te justifies the action of the Mayor Iam certain, and although certain of the city ministers haunting the city building, appear to be doing their utmost to coerce His Worship [think he has too much of John Bull about him for that, and while remarking how strange and uabecoming it is for min- isters of the Gospel, all of them strangers here, to attempt dictation tothe people’s chosen representatives, | may assure. his Worship that the bone and sinew of the city, those who pay the taxes and have something at stake in the place, are one with him in bis stand on this matter, and will also keep a strict eye on those of the Council who will allow them te be ridden rough-ehod over,

THE CUBAN REBLLLION,

Spanish Gunboat Sunk.

Havana advices state thaton Sunday the 17th inst, a Spanish gunboat was sunk by insurgents by meaus of a torpedo, and several of the crew were killed. A de- tachment of rebels attacked the fort at Guamo, some distance up the Canto river, province of Santiago de Cuba. The Spanish troops asked for assistance from Manzanille, on the coast, and Saturday night the guaboats Centinela and Relam- pago left Manzunillo to ascend the river and protect the fort. The gunbéats used all possible speed in ranning up the coast to the mouth of the river, but when they begav to ascend the stream they proceeded cautiously, as it was suspected the rebels might have planted torpedoes in the channel. When the gunboats were oppo- site Mango, despite ail the precautions taken, the Relampego s'ruck a torpedo. Instantly there was a terrific explesion and masses Of water were hurled to a great height. The hull of the Relampago was torn open and she began to sink. There was no time to lower a boat, and the vessel soon went down. Those on board who were not injured jumped into the water an? made their way in the directiou of the Centinella, aboard of which the greatest excitement prevaile |,
