rial Federation committee has decided to hold a mass meeting on January 10th, whena branch of the league will be formed for the county. Itis announced that speakers from St. John and Halifax wili be invited for the occasion.

Scorr Act.—There were sixteen Scott Act cases on the docketthisforenoon. Three of the defendants, viz: Peter McArthur, Charles Collings and Joseph Kent were fined $50 each, six other cases were dis- missed, and the remainder were adjourned till Friday next.

FRoM SUMMERSIDE.—Telephonic reports from Summerside are to the effect that the ice in that harbor extends out as far as the eye can see. The St. Lawrence did not suc ceed in breakiag her way out until about ten o'clock this forenoon, and arrived here about four o'clock this afternoon.

To Ssirrers.--We understand that the Canada Atlantic 8. S. Co. havearranged for the SS. Halifax to make a Iste trip from Souris and Georgetown, about Christmas (weather and ice permitting). This will be &great convenience to shippers at these ports, who are now preparing a large cargo for her.

Axristic.—In its comment upon the pic- tures at the Loa Exhibition, now being held at Moutreal, the Gazette says : ‘* Mr. Harris has given us a sympathetic piece of portraiture in his head of ** An Exile,” en- tirely admirable in its subdued strength of drawing and color, and reminding one of Titian in its handling.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT.—The Farmer reports : “ A very serious accident happened in Larkins’ shingle mill at Conway Station last Tuesday evening. A young man named MeNeiil was starting the shingle cutter, and in teaching through his right hand to move the block carrier which he missed touching, his hand dropped, and the shingle saw severed his hand just a tittle above the wrist. Dr. Long, of Tyne Valley, was hastily summoned, and under his skilful treatment the wound was dressed.”

Scorr Acr.—Moncton will make another effort to carry out the Scott Act. At a meet ing on Monday night, the town council de- cided, without a dissenting voice, to under- take the enforcement of the act. The police are instructed to perform their duty as laid down by law. If the officers are of the right calibre and the council stand by their deter- mination, Moncton has now an excellent op- portunity to convince a somewhat sceptical world that this law can be practically en- forced. —St. John Sun.

Magic Heater Satye.—We learn that John Ross & Co., of this city, have recently shipped to the order of a prominent druggist in Halifax, three gross of their excellent Salve, It is gratifying to find an article of home production making its way into some of the larger cities of our Dominion. We hope its merits may become more widely known, and its sales extend from P. E Island to British Columbia. We are informed that ar- rangements have been made for its manufac ture and sale in the United States, and trust that Mr. Ross may live to enjoy an ample in- come from the sale of this excellent prepara- tion

Tae Curistrmas Srar.—Mr. Theo. L. Chappelle bas placed on our table the Xinas number of the Montreal Star. Graham & Co. the publishers, have been very success- ful in their former productions of carnival numbers, bat the present issue exceeds any former effort. The typographical appear- ance is perfect, the selections first-class, and the presentation pictures excellent. No finer souvenir to absent friends could be devised. The price is only 50 ceats for the entire package, and may be had at the Dia- mond Bookstore.

Pveiistic.—Jake Kilrain, who is in Bos- ton at present, has been inteviewed in ref- erence to the recent challenge of John L. Sullivan. He said he was glad that Sulli- van had at last come to the front after all his bluffing. The proposition to fight for $10,000, and on neutral ground, suited him in every particular, and he was anxiously waiting to hear from his backer, Richard K. Fox. Kilrain said he would be willing to fight under the auspices of the Califor- nia Athletic Club, and Jet the $10,000 stake stand, in addition to thesum the Ath- letic Club would gladly subscribe to- have the fight take place under their roof. If California is not available, Kilrain would beglad to have the contest decided at Richmond, Va., or Mississippi City, where John L. Sullivan defeated Paddy Ryan for the championship.

Loxpon, Dee. 193. A Paris despatch to the Daily News says: ‘* During another exciting scene at the Panama Canal Company's oftice to-day, on a call for M. DeLesseps, Charles DeLesseps, his son, appeared and announced that only 180,000 bonds had been subscribed for, and that the company would therefore com mence returning the deposits to-morrow. | Referring to his father's remarks on the | previous day he said: * My father is young- erin spirit than I. His remarks were! made on the stredgth of the hopeful report I made him. The result is bankruptey or the winding up of the company.’ "He urged them to petition the Government to | come to the assistance of the company.”

Parnell Commission. Lonpoy, Dec. 14.

_At the meeting of the Parnell Commis- sion to-day, a man named Buckley testified that he was sworn in the Fenian Brother- hood in 1880. In 1883 a man named Roach had been expelled from the League tor giving fnformation to the police which

led to the arrest of several members of the league. The meeting arranged that witness with Fitzgerald and Pheenix should sheot Roach. Revolvers were given them, and the men

followed Roach but found no opportunity to shoot him. At another meeting the witness agreed to shoot Roach if the league prvcided him with funds to escape to America. The wituess was given a revol- ver and 24 cartridges and advised to prac tice, which he did. The witness met , Roach driving cattle and attempted to }shoot him. He pulled the trigger three jtimes, but the weapon missed fire and Roach bolted. The witness was arrested, but, as pre-arranged, witness swore he was at Dean's house when the attempt was made, and he was released. The league yave witness two pounds, ten shillings to go to America. He was told he could not expect more in view of his failure. His statement caused a sensation in court.

The Standard says it has reason to be- lieve that the letter ,received at Suakim from Osman Digna stated that the Mahdi’s trvops had at length been successful and }that Emin held out bravely, but that his men mutinied and delivered him, with a white traveller (supposed to be Stanley) to the Mahdi’s leader. John Lewis, colored, who shot and killed his mistress, Alice Jackson, was to-day sentenced tu death on February Ist, by the new electrical contrivance, under the law recently passed providing for the abolishing of hanging and substitution therefor of electricity.
