Mexican Mountain of Iron.
which is to be used in the state of Durango, Mexico, in getting out iron. his iron mine which is to be worked is a great mourtain, some 2,000 feet high, situated only fifteen or twenty miles from Durango, in the state of Darang», and it is said to be the most remarkable mountain in the world. It is almost solid iron, and is at the base three-quar- ters of a mile in thickness, thus giving enough of metal to supply the entire iron market of the country for years.
This iron mountain has for years been the envy of iron manufacturers, who have wanted to get a lease upon it, and work it, but the Government has all the time refused to allow this to be done until quite recently, when a contract was entered into between the Govern- ment and some New York capitalists, for the operation and development of it upon the partnership plan, and the ma- chinery is now being shipped there for that purpose. The ore obtained from this mountain is said to yleld about 87 per cent. pure iron. The machinery which is being carried there is extensive, and will be put into operation as soon as possible.

A statistician, on the assumption that the earth constins 1,400,000,000 inhabi- tants, estimates their brains as weigh- ing 1,922,712 tons. This gives an average weight of about 49 ounces per head of the population, which is probably too yvenerous an allowance. According to the observations of physiologists, the average weight of brain in an adult male is 48 ounces, and in a female 43 ounces, while at birth it is said to be about 14 and 12 ounces, respectively. Something, how- ever, must be deducted from the above estimate, as a child’s brain at the age of 7 years averages about 40 ounces, and Yeyond the aga of 40 years the weight slowly but steadily declines at the rate of about one ounce in ten years. More wver, the brains of idiots are generally much below tha average, some weighing Jess than 15 ounces. A German hiologist cans calculated that each human brain contains 300,000,000 nerve cells, 5,699,- 00 of which die and are succeeded by new ones every day.

Sir James Fitzjames Stephen was a eat lawyer, but he has left a very Fittle will. The exact text of it is this: “This is my last will. I give all my property to my wife, whom I appoiat my sole executrix.” How the family solicitor would have embellished this simple statement of a simple testa mentary intention most of us can easily conjecture. ‘Will’ would have become “will and testament;” property would have become “‘real and personal estate” at least; and there would have been a long rigmarole about révoking “‘all pre- vious wills and codicils.” It is gratify- ing to have such conclusive evidence of the true value of the elaborate legal phraseology which is engrossed at a charge of so much a folio to the lgwyer's «lient.—London Daily Graphic.

Those Who Knew Eliot Under- stood the Meaning of This Phrase.
George
Songa Kovaleosky, that remarkable Russian woman who has a genius for mathematics, and whose autobiography
has recently been given to English read ers, left some very interesting reminis- cences of George Eliot. Her impression of the novelist on their first meeting, in 1873, testifies to Eliot’s fascination in spite of exceptional plainness:—
' frankly admit, she says, that the first ry ression I had when I lifted my eyes to George Eliot was a vague hope that I was mistaken, that it was not she, that it was some one else—for she seemed to me so homely and different from what I had imagined her. I hac never seen her portrait. Mr, Rallston had only said that although she was not handsome, she was very attractive. It had given moe pleasure to paint her in my imagination such as I would like to have her—the reality was very different. An old, thin woman, with a nose which, although well shaped, was disproportionately large for a woman's face, long English teeth which projected a littie from the mouth, A black lace dress helped to emphasize the thinness of the neck and
the imperfect complexion Such was George Eliot as she appeared to me at the first moment.
But the sound of the voice made a difference. It ‘‘seemed to give me back
my George Eliat,’’ declares the Russian. ‘“‘I have never in my life heard a more sympathetic, more harmonious voi than hers. Turgenief, who generally was very sensitive to beauty, and who in this respect was a great au- thority, said to me when speaking of George Eliot: ‘I know that she is plain —but I do not see it.’’ He also said that it was not till after he had become ac- quainted with George Eliot that he could understand how one could find an indis- putably plain woman charming.
This is a strong statement of a com
mon experience with those whose privi- lege it was to meet the greatest English woman writer of fiction. It illustrates the transcendence of what is called “charm’’ over mere appearance of char- acter or features. George Eliot’s draw- ing room in London was for years @ cen- ter of sweetness and light and the win- someness and nobility of the mistress is the expianation. The warm friendship which existed between her and Mrs. Stowe is another indication of her qual- ity.—Hartford Courant.
A Seare in India. A curious seare ran throngh the Prov- ince of Assam, in India, recently, which it took the officials some time to under- stand. The story was that Queen Vic- toria wanted five children’s heads from each village. The Bengali coolies went frantic, asking for axes and knives to defend their families, factories were for tified, watch being kept all night, ana
in some vitlages all the inhabitants hid themselves. The heads, they believed, were wanted to pnt under the founda
tions of a great bridge being built. It is the tradition among these people that their ancestors placed human victims
under the great prehistoric monoliths.
