A MERTING of the Licensing Board was held on Friday evening at half-past seven oelock. The only applications befcre the Board were that of John MeQullan for store heense, and Thomas Campbell for tavern license, both of which were granted.

Wesee, by this morning’s Patriot, that Hon. Daniel Gordon spoke enthusiastically ia favor of the Opposition candidates, and paid a worthy eulogy to Sir John Me- Donald. When will the balance of our Liberal-Conservatives in the local ‘* com- bination” follow Mr. Gordon’s example.

Aw influential meeting of Liberal-Con- servatives was held at Saw Mill Bridge on Saturday evening last. Thomas McGrath and Abraham Gill, Esqs., were appointed delegates to the Convention to be held on the 19th of July, and imstructed to cast the vote for Lot 24 in favor of Pope and Brecken.

Too Tuix.—Col. McGill’s sugar-coated pill, in the shape of a huge cake for the Crapaud tea, which created such merriment as it was borne past our office this morning, on its way to the steamer, will, we think, be scarcely swallowed by the intelligent yeomanry of Crapaud. The Colonel’s head may be plum, yet we think he will be told that the district requires something more tangible than a sweetcake. We give this as a currant item.

Tue Patriot, having exhausted his spleen towards the Hon. J. C. Pope, has com- menced abusing Hon. 8. L. Tilley—a

entleman universally respected and be- oved. We also see that the Halifax papers have commenced their calumny towards the Liéutenant Governor of New Brunswick. The organs of the “‘Organized Hypocrisy” forcibly remind us of the ‘‘viper gnawing the file.”

James Murrpny was the only prisoner at the bar of the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon. He was arrested on complaint of Mr. John McEachern. On Saturday evening he entered Mr. Me- Eachern’s store (Italian Warehouse), in a disorderly state of intoxication, snatched a sum of money which was lying on the counter, and was leaving the store when caught. He wassentenced to three months’ imprisonment, with hard labor, for vag- rancy. This penalty will not be enforced if he leaves the City within twenty.four hours.

On Saturday evening a number of juve- niles broke into a forge owned by Mr. Alexander Russel, on Duncan’s Wharf. After breaking in, they carried a large

uantity of brass pipe, etc., from the place.

hey also continued to carry a lot of copper material during Sunday. The matter was reported to the police this forenoon. Offi- cers McKinnon and Pollard examined the premises and succeeded in arresting one of the party—a boy named Edward O’Neill— and recovering a part of the stolen proper- ty. Four others implicated are still at

large.

Ow Saturday night last about 11 o’clock, a crowd of ronghs assembled at the corner of Water and Great George Streets and en- gaged ina most determined fight, holding undisputed sway for nearly an hour. One of our city newspaper reporters was present, but no note as yet has been made in the columns of that paper. As usual, the police were conspicuous for their absence, although if the officer on this beat had been attend- ing to his duty, he would have passed the corner at least three times during the drunken row. We cannot, it seems, place much confidence in our brave force. At this same place, on Sunday evening,a crowd of youths assembled, and in loud tones in- dulged in the most obscene language.

Drownine Accipents.—Frederick Reid, son of Mr. Gideon Reid, of Mill Village, Cornwallis, was drowned in Killam’s Pond on Saturday while bathing. He was 16 years ot age.—-On Monday, Arthur Herbert, aged 14,s0n of Rey. OU. C. Herbert, of Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co., was drown- ed in the Annapolis River,while bathing. — On Sunday, Judson Day, a young man of twenty summers, was drowned in a_ mill pond at McDonald’s Point, Queens Co., N. B., while bathing. His clothes were found on the bank of the pond, and shortly after his lifeless body was brought up from the bottom.—J. 8. Bedlow, Superintendent of | the Western Union Telegraph Company at) Portland, Me., was drowned on Tuesday morning while attempting to rescue his child, who was bathing at Old Orchard Beach.

Prince Milan, at the opening session of Skuptzchevea, at Kragaujevatz, declared that he was satisfied with the decision of the Berlin Congress in relation to Servia.

It is declared in Russian circles that the prospect of Count Schouvaloff succeeding Prince Gortschakoff, depends upon the Count’s ability to inaugurate a policy aim- ing at an English alliance.

Vienna, July 5.

The occupation of Bosnia and Herzego- vinia has been finally postponed until August, in order to give time for the res- toration of the railways, and the organiza- tion of the future administration of these Provinces.

Orrawa, July 5.

The new counterfeit one dollar Dominion note is clever, but the work on the back is blurred. The letter ‘i’ in Harrington’s signature is not dotted. ‘The figures in the numbers are smaller, and the bills are a little larger. The Government offer a re- ward for the conviction of the counterfeit- ers.

Monrreat, July 5.

Nearly one hundred magistrates met to- day to confer on the peace of the city. A stormy and digraceful meeting it was. There will now be a requisition to the military autho- rities, and it is freely stated that the 97th will be ordered from Halifax. That regi- ment alone would ensure peace on the 12th.

The Hon. Mr. Blake was here to-day, en route for Europe.

ANTIGONISH, July 5.

A fire broke ont this morning in the barn of John F. Cunningham, Clerk of Licenses, and it was totally destroyed. A horse, car- riage, sleigh, etc., were burnt. Loss five hundred dollars. The building was insured. in the Queens for two hundred dollars. The fire is believed to be the work of an incen- diary.

New York, July 5.

During a tornado and thunder storm, eighteen miles above Pittsburg, Pa., yester- day afternoon, the lightning caused the ig- niting of the Vesta Oil Works, destroying 80,000 barrels of oil, and causing a loss of $100,000.
