X-Press office flooded

drenched by amysterious accumulation of water from the ceiling on the morn- ing of Friday, January 22. The problem was actually discovered upstairs on the main floor of the main building where a maintenance em- ployee noticed steam on the windows of the faculty lounge early that morning. On investi- gating he discovered water coming from hot water pipes that had frozen overnight before thawing out and releasing a good deal of water. The employee estimated that the leakage had only been in progress for a shorttime before its discovery, and swift clean-up minimized the damage though much of the newspaper office below was soaked. Much of the water was vacuumed from the office floors that morning, though the carpeting in the editor’s office. re- mained damp for some time thereafter, contrib- uting to a musty atmosphere that has yet to dissipate.

Many miscellaneous papers were soaked by the water, but the one serious concern was the condition of the office computer equipment, some of which had absorbed a large amount of water. The equipment was dismantled and left to dry over the week-end, and when it was reassembled the following Monday, it was all functional, to the surprise of computer services personnel; however, it was by then too late to begin regular Monday newspaper production, and no newspaper was produced for the week of January 28. The newspaper has since resumed its normal publication schedule, and mainte- nance is working to ensure that there are no further problems with the pipes. @

What’s up with the theatre society

by Stacy Dunn he U.P.E.I. Theatre Society is preparing Tis annual spring production, which al lows a professional director to do a full length play of his or her choice.

This time, the society invited Laurel Smyth to direct the drama Quiet in the Land by Ann Chislett. It was written in the early ‘80’s and won Chislett a Governor General’s Award. The play is set during World War I in an Amish community in southern Ontario. Smyth says the issue that the drama deals with is pacifism, the refusal to go to war. She adds that the play confronts the way Canadians have treated mi- norities within their borders, has a conflict between the generations, and is a love story.

Laurel Smyth, who has had a productive theatre career in writing, directing, and acting, believes a play should examine social issues and explore the dimension of people’s lives. In

fact, one play she wrote and directed, called Typecasting, dealt with racism.

On a lighter note, Smyth once directed a UPEI Theatre Society production called “‘Count Oederland.’’ Sheis looking forward to working with the society again in Quiet in the Land. The play consists of a large cast,the type she likes to direct. She also likes to create a positive working environment and thinks her experience as an actor brings to her directing role an opportunity to discover various imaginative possibilities and expand her creativity.

When will Quiet in the Land be performed? The dates are March 19, 20, and 21. The 19th and 20th are evening performances, and the 21st is a matinee performance.
