Mayy Lives Lost. — It is probable, says a late despatch from Port Townshend, Wash, that the number of lives lost ig the rush to Alaskain ‘earch for gold will never be krovn, and the marn’r in which hundreds of persons have met death in the wilds of Alaska will ever remain the subject of speculation among the friends and relatives. The latest reports tell of the fate of 18 persons who are said to bave been killed while trying to enter the mouth of the Kuskokwim river last June on the steamer Jesse. The story has just been brought from that ceciion in a letter to Barneson & Chilvat, who were part owners ‘ao the wrecked steamer.

It is at least 14 feet in depth and appears in the form of waves as if carried and deposited there by the action of a flowing tide. In character it consists of bard and smooth round pebbles with some mixture of coarse sand, Mr Mc= Kenzie’s predecessor the Jate Mr. Jobo McLeod, sold some of this gravel to persons in different parts of the Island, by all of whom it washighly appreciated. The quantity apparen'ly is inexhans ible for it is traced in several of the adjoining farms. Would it not bs a judicious step for our Dominion Governmeot to construct a branch railway from the main line to this place which is scarcely more than two miles either from Clyde or Fredericton stations. In this way the government could secure this superior gravel - for the use of the railroad instead of the compar- atively useless material now available and applied;on some paris Of the road, besides, the branch railway would afford shippiog and travelling accommodation to Sirath- albyn and the large sections of country lying south of it.
