Everybody needs water; every little cell in the body is practically a little fish and must have water to live.

Further, there is no question but that the great majority do not drink Quite enough water daily; the gen- eral health of the country would be better if more water were taken daily. a

However there are two types of in. dividual _who would be. better if less water were taken—the very fat and the very thin. The very fat individ- ual would welsh less and feel better because fat timue holds a great amount of water‘ anyway, and the very thin ones often have such a narrow body that the stomach hangs too low and if much water is taken at one time, or at meals, it makes a long uphill climb for water and food to get out of the stoina “- into the small intestine.

Now the same thing applies to bran. There is no question but that themajority of individuals are con- stipatcd; a. little bran added to the usual cereal might therefore he suf- flcient to irritate the lining of the large intestine sufficiently to m. crease its rnuscul action and thus

the body. This applies to the aver- age indlvidual with a good appetite and not bothered to any extent with formation of gas.

However lust as too much water is not good for everybody so too much bran can cause trouble. Thus it has been found that patients with a weak digestion and a ‘ daucy to Wimll/e 80S ‘ tion are likely sooner or later to be troubled with indigestion if bran is used.

In an attempt to correct constipa- tion sorne individuals eat consider- able bran and so do not eat enough nourishing food to keep up their weight and strength.

The thought then is that a little bran can be used safely with bene- flt by many constipated individuals, but “its use should be s‘ ,, m; minute that it begins to produce 1n. digestion. gas formation, and loss of weight in the body."

Some cases are recorded where- bran has actually blocked the intcg. tine but fortunately these cases are not common.

The Journal of the American Medical Associat states, "Bran should be prescribed with discretion and‘ always the patient and Physic. ian should know enough to stop its use as soon as discomfort appears."

the individual whatever. but it was indirectly through my professional contact with him that I got on the track of then one of the most wonderful and remunerativs dustries in the world.

name was probably the most com- monly lnisspelt surname printed in the cwspapers. Except where he (or the family) was personally known. the name was wt to appear in print as "Dawson" or "Daviscal." The Davsons are an old Anglo- Guianese family, having hold sugar plantations and done business in Demerara and Barbies for near- ly two hundred years. The present baroneth uncle was the first managing-director of the Brit- ish Guisna Bank (now absorbed by the Royal Bank of Canada.) and his son, cousin of Blr Edward. Bil" Charles Simon Davaon. whom I knew as acting attorney-general and acting Puisne Judge of British Guiana, recently retired from the position of Judicial Commissioner of the Western Pacific. ~

Bir Edward is the eldest of three thers, all of whom have at- tained to distinction in their re- spective spheres. There is who became a flout-Colonel, a DBO. and a CMG. and who has written authoritatively on Napol- eonulvfarshals, The History of the 85th Division, and kindred military subjects. Then there is Ivan, who also became a Limit-Colonel, an 0.81:. and T.D., who has to his credit books on “West Indian Cur- rency" and "The Position of Brit- ish Colonial Sugar." But it is Sir Edward who has appeared most conspicuously in the public eye. He took part in the Ottawa Conference and also the London Economic Con- ference last year as representative of the Colonies and Plotectorates.

l-Ie is chairman of the Federation of cllambe of Commerce of the British Elnlpire, and of the West Indian conference. Sir Edward has written voluminously on Imperial problem and is undoubtedly

One day I commented to him on the fact that there wue more blends of Scotch whisky all-venis- ed in the colonies than there were disti and blender-s combined in Scotland, and asked how he ox- plained» it. He said he could not, but referred me to a Geriluu im- porter, m. B. B. Conrad. That gentleman disposed of my inquiry by telling me the nerd; time r weni to London he would give me s. let- ter of introduction to a friend of his who would enlighten me.

He asked me to smell the mixture, which to all intents and purposes was raw malt whisky. Replacing the first bottle of tinc- tlne the chemist took down another bottle, added a few drops to the concoction, shook the test glass, and again let me smell it. ‘mat. he said, was three year old Scotch whisky. Again taking down a bot- tle of tincture he added more drops. shook the mixture, and let me smell it. ‘rho aroma was distinctly that of good quality whisky, and he advised me it was "five years old." He‘ next emptied the test glass, rinsed it carefully. pnd again had recourse to the German pota- to spirit, adding water, he was going to produce "very Wed Scotch whisky. matured in sherry casks." I-fe dropped s. rrlodl- culn of tincture from two new bot- tles, let. it settle about a minute, asked me to smell it. and them in- formed me that that was the best export aged whisky on the ruarket.
