POTATOES,

In Charlottetown there is but a small local demand for Potatoes. A _ few schooners are loading at outports for the Provincial markets. They are paying from 16 to 17 cents per bushe). This price is paid in the city, In Halifax the sales are reported slow at 30 cents per bushel. The Boston market continues to be liberally supplied with tubers, but, with improved trade prices, are firmer. The best Holton Rose sold there, bring from 53 to 55 cents, and Eastern Rose are selling at 50 to 53 cents per bushel. Prolifics are 52 to 55 cents.

The market for pork is dull, and dealers in the city are operating cautiously. From 43 to 5} cents is the prices per carcass paid. In Chicago the general impression is that prices will be still lower. Mess in that city only brings $11. Here it sells at $15, and prime at $12. In Montreal Western Mess is quoted at $14.75 to $15.25, and fair movement is experienced.

The re- cent attempt to open the Doichester copper mines seems to be no exception t» the rule. It appears that Mr. W. Patrick, for 4 certainamount which Mr. H. entirely repudiates, and for whicl: he claims to hold receipts. When arrested Mr. Howell requested the Deputy Sheriff to call at the office of Mr. C. A, Stockton, which was done, and an arrangement was there made for his appearance. In the meantime Mr. H. R. Emerson, of Dorchester, was telegraphed for and he arrived this morning, in company with Messra. Geo. W, Chandier and S. Edgar Wilson, who agreed to enter into bonds in the sum of $15,000 for Major Howell’s appearance in the Supreme Court. This afternoon Mr.

even giving the inmates sufficient time to make their escape. As a matter of course the inmates became rather indignant and offered resistence by throwing dangerous weapons of paraphernalia, which no dovbt took effect as vestiges of punishment were quite conspicuous on some of the offenders during the following few days.

‘‘Jack Frost” has become rampant, and put in his savaye appearance very suddenly.

The brig. ‘‘Fanny,” which has been loading for some time at Vernon River Bridge, is now lying at Brush Wharf to complete her cargo. Through the activity and energy of Mr. M, Stevens, who is purchasing the oats here, she will soon: be ready to sail.

Quite a number of young ladies, formerly belonging to this place, are now residing in Boston, and some of them occasionally pay a fleeting visit to their native home, to see their friends and to enjoy and refresh themselves during our delightful summer months. But they seldom return alone. The young lady that visited us this past summer, Miss Annie McDonald, has said ‘‘good bye” to her faiends and has again, accompanied by Miss McDonald, bid a fond farewell to the enchant- ing scenery of Orwell’s hills and dales, and they are now speeding on their way to Boston. We wish them a pleasant journey.

During the past season some of our farmers here have been endeavoring to cultivate the sugar beet on a limited scale, but owing to the voracious appetite of the calves, and a lack of fence poles, their efforts have been completely thwarted.

Owing to the preservi ving of meat in cans, fowls are in good demand here. Ax Oup Tar.
