MORNING STOCK LETTER

The low volumes and restricted gains of the present rally are not ‘impressive and offer no assurance that the selling movement is over. However, the lack of rallying power may very well be due to the un- certainties of the French election which will be held Sunday. While

the French political situation and its bearing on the European crisis will not be altogether clear until the fina.l election on May 3rd it is believed that a pronounced swing one way or another of French pub- 11: opinion would showvitself def- initely in the first vote and help to clarify the general European outlook. The nervousness of the French franc as the election date approaches is not helping stock market sentiment. We continue to feel, nevertheless, that while pol- itical uncertainties are many and while trade activity may soon be- gin to level off that the general ecoromlc and technical conditions are too good to permit an extend- ed market decline at present.

TORONTO. April 23--The min- ing market was heavy all round today, chiefly on New York weak- ness but the recent display of buying lethargy was no doubt a factor. Spotty strength appeared in the early session, inspired main- ly by recent annual statements in- dicating progress but they were caught in the afternoon decline and they lost as much as the oth- ers. The exchange index for the golds slipped back a point and the miscellaneous mines index was off two point from 134.23 to 132.17.

Coniagas, Coniarum and Argosy perked up in the early trade, help- ed by the Coniagas annual state- ment. The parent -.ompany stood up under the afternoon sell-off, holding a. gain of 25 cents but Argmy held only 3 cents of a 9 cent gain and Coniarum, after reaching 2.75. dropped to 2.58 for a net loss of 7 cents. Announce- ment oi a 5 cent dividend for Ventures, half to be paid in June and the other half next January, impressed traders unfavorably and the price quickly dropped 15 cents to $1.90. The cloie at 1.95 was off 10 cents net. Siscoe lost 11 cents, Pickle Crow 10 and Beattie 8. Issues losing 2 to 5 cents

MW. Market, Follows Wall Street Trend

MONTREAL, April 23.-A flood of bearls.h sentiment that followed re- actionary tendencies on Wall street depressed prices as much as four points on Montreal Stock Exchange today.

Scattered issues worked against the downward trend, but most of the list lined up with weak leaders and closed lower. Banks, usually steady, showed the widest losses.

Nickel, more or less steady at the start. lost ground when the bids came lower and finished off 1% point to 47. Noranda gave up la, but I-Iollinger firmed a small amount.

Constructions did little to add to the day's volume but some of the big losses were shown in that group. Foundation Company and steel of Canada dipped a point each. Can- ada Cement and Dominion Bridge eased fraeilcnally.

Royal Bank of Canada took the biggest jolt. with a four-point drop at 168 while Commerce slipped a point to 150. Others were slightly easier on odd-lot transfers.

More than 2,000 shares of the day's trade was taken up by Brazil- ian Traction, but the loss was only ‘,4. at 11%.. Canadian Hydro-Electric Preferred firmed ‘.8 while Montreal Power, Canada Northern. British Columbia and Power Corporation yielded’ 9. bit.

A new low for a year or more was touched by Howard Smith Preferred at 90, ofl 1-“.1 point. Bathurst, St. Lawrence Paper Preferred and Dry- den were down fractions.

Dominion Textile and Canadian Foreign Investment were off a point or so each.
