In referenceeto Prof. Greg- ier's article on a "draft curriculum for the Faculty of Arts” I would like to ex- tract one particular point of interest to me and ex- press my views. The matter which interests me is the .possibility of a student, Seekingla BA degree, being required to take "two cours- es in biology, chemistry,, math or physics”.

The majority of "Arts" stu- Mdents to whom I have Spoken are absolutely horrified at this preposal. As a lo ogy major, seeking a BSC. degree I would like to point out something to the people in the Arts department. There exists in every program in the Science department right now a course designed for .Arts students. TheSe programs 9— Biology 101-102, Chemistry 101-102, Math_101-102 and Physics 101-102 are designed for the particular interest of those people who haVe little background on the subject matter and who do not plan on going further in the subject. You man say big deal, we have 100 courses in the Arts department too.

What I must make clear here iis~that these 100 courses are completely separate from the 100 courses that the ’science Student must go into. What these courses do is sort of give you a taste of sev- ‘eral matters which are in- volved in these areas. I am very pleased that the Sci- rence department realizes that a person does not have to be a science major to have an interest in science subjects and has layed out programs of interest that such persons can grasp and enjoy with the assurance that the professor realizes that the person in the course is not a 'scientist'.

What amazes me is that these courses are in existence right now and the Arts stu- dents aren't even required to take science courses yet. Now let's take a look at the B.Sc. major who is required to take arts courses, to be exact, 43 semester hours worth of Arts courses. With this in mind, do we find any courses in the Arts Depart- ment designed for the Science student who is required to ' take their courses??....... Well, I certainly haven't - found any in my years here! It seems to me that any arts

course which I or any of my fellow students have taken are designed for arts stu- dents. When we go to these arts courses we are expec- ted to be as up on matters as the rest of thezpeople in the class. How can this be possible especially above .first year level when arts students (those who aren't lazy and are interested) ee- quire at least 100 hours at a minimum, basic reading to have a really good graSp of their subject. Would some- one like to tell me where

who could Spend 24 hours a day in the lab they have so much to do and learn — where are we supposed to find time to do all theSe readings so we can have a good graSp on the arts courses we have to take too??

Quite a few if not all of the arts COHI‘t’S also re- quire sometime during the run of the course, a written paper or papers on their sub- ject. What a disaster for us....! Now don't get me wr- ong, I'm not saying that we shouldn't have to write a paper because I feel strong- ly about people having to express themselves in writing. However, on the other hand,

I do not feel that it is ri- ght that our papers should be picked apart because we don't have enough scope on the subject which we are writing about. I would like to see how well an arts [student or even most arts professors would do writing a paper on a second, third or fourth year science course. How many of you people would feel confident after being in a course in exam le genetics for two or three months about-setting down and writing a paper, confident that you had a good scope on the subject matter involved which also demands an understanding of basic biology, biochemistry and math? We are n31 arts majors, just as you people are 321 science majors, so why can't someone see this and set up programs for so- ience students most of whom have little background other than a high school perSpect- ive in your subjects? I do notwish not to take arts co- urses because I think it to be very important that a person have some knowledge

in subjects other than their major, but I do not wish or enjoy taking courses in subjects that don't come half way.
