Willard Kelly and Willard MacDonald returned home last Sunday after an eigm. dly trip to the U.S.A. in which they covered 3.200 miles, visited three race tracks and had a really good time. Going away they head- ed right for Foxboro and saw the racing there Monday night. Octo- ber 16th. It was very cold but not- withstanding there was some good racing with close finishes and is fairly good attendance. The real excitement of the night was pro- vided by the three-year-old pacer Wayzoff by Royal Napoleon 2.01. dam, Jane Azoff l.591.&, well known to Mai-itimers as she was formerly owned by CH. Horton, Murray River and raced by Willard Kelly. Wayzoff has been a winner all through the season, not only over the Maine raceways but also at Rcosevelt and other tracks. That night -when he hit the first turn driver Clark tucked in in third place and never made a move until they passed the three-quarter pole, then pulled out and Wayzoff went around Bonnie Volo and Private George, two very high class per- formers. so easily that he won by nearly three length! in 2.04 1-5 - a wcnderful performance for such :1 cold night, The track pacing rec- ord is 2.03 3-5, made by Wzyzoff October 7th. Glancing over the program which Rankin left wlm us we note that Harry Coleman, who handles the McGee and Snow sta- ble. is leading dri r with 190 points and in sixth pace is the Quebec driver LaRoehelle with 106 points.

After Wayzofi won so handily a buyer approached owners Mccsc and snow and made an offer of 318,000. Mr. McGee -was in favor (I accepting but Mr. Snow, who is a millionaire, said, no, and wrote out a check for 9,000 for Mr. Mc- Gee's share. At 518.000 Wayzoff locks to be a bargain and quite capable of pacing in 2.00 or better over a good mile track. Lucky Number 2.11 1-5 and Yankee Dale 2.18 2-5, owned by Willard Kelly, are both out of Jane Apoff 1.5911 Among those they met while visit- ing Foxboro was Billy Hood, who is in charge of the C.H. as H. L. Sim- onson stable. Bridgewater, Maine. owners of Private George 2.02, that placed third in the Wayzoff race. Billy is in fine fettle but is not doing any driving. They also saw Roy Barnett. who is having good success with Donald (3.3. A few nights before he had been in a photo finish in 2.06 3-5.

Lcqing Foxboro they took off for Yonkers Raceway. one of the finest plants in the U.S.A., where racing will continue until Novem- ber llth. Joe O'Brien is stabled there with ten head. They did not have a chance to talk with him but saw him drive McManus in the sixth race. Joe won with him in 2.06 2-5 from a gcod field. The purse was 32.000 and there was 933.750 bet to win, 324,700 bet for place and 315,000 bet for show - a total of over 3103.000 for one heat!

Returning home Saturday they stopped off at New Gloucester. Maine, and had a talk with Earle Sample, who has won his last four races -with Mary Merk and a share of the purse money with others in

his stable. That night there was I very bad accident in race No. 5. Jenny Lynn at the pole was leading almost entering the back '. with lock Hanover am 2-0. own- ed by Bert Yerxa, Sussex, N. B. on the outside. Dr. Brodie. Lady Maud, Brewer Abbe and Patrick Dale all crowded in behind. Lock and Jenny Lynn must have tangled somehow as lock went up in the air. then turned a complete somer- suult, Jenny Lynn went down and the others all piled on top. Th0 sulkies were smashed into splint- ers. A driver suffered a. broken arm and all some injuries, only three of the horses faced the starter for the second heat cf the race. A few days later Lock Hanover was 2-3 in a fast pace at Cumberland, Maine.

She is a nice big bay mare, weighing upwards of 1,100 pounds. He has also the brood mare Grace Symbol. by Symbol Forest, dam. Aline Direct by Walter Direct. She has been bred to Simcoe Harvester 2.04 1-4.

Aubrey Aiiken of Bay Fortune, has a two-year-old Playdale 2.04- 1-2, dam, Miss Belle Aubrey, also a weanling filly of the same breed- ing . Douglas Aitken, well known farmer of Bay Fortune. has a Playdalc out of Princess Spruce, second dam by Frisco Direct, third dam by Lea by Benares by Bin- gara . . . Howard Wood of Red House. RR. 4. has a handsome filly by Simcoe I-larves-ier 2.04 1-4. dam. Gracious Lady 2.12. This mare is very highly bred and raced with success in Maine several years ago . . . Tom Manning of New Zealand, is the owner of the valuable brood mare Betty Direct 2.10 1-4, by Grattan Direct, out of Betty Grattan by Grattan Royal. She is the dam of Betty Budlong 2.12 1-2. He thinks a lot of a two-year-old filly by Calumet Duds 2.09 1-4, also a lhree-year- old by Calumet Duds. The dam of these was sired by George Washington 2.09 1-2, second dam Kazoff, third dam Alberta Patchen.

Peter Nolan, a well read horse- man of Chepstow. is the owner of June Worthy and has a num- -ber of colts from her by King Spruce. They run in ages from five to eight years. Others he owns are a three-year-old by Playdale 2.04 1-2, a' two-year-old by Calumet Budlong. 2.02 3-4, a yearlmr by Ginger. by Volomite, and a weanling by Calumet Bud- long. June Worthy is now in foal to Pagliacci. Percy states it was a pleasure to visit Mr. Nolan's farm and see the good condition of these horses.

The third annual Hockey Coach- es and Referees School will be held here again thb year it was intimat- ed recently by the Department of Physical Fitness. As in the past two years. the school is expected to be held early in December when spec- ial instructcrs will be brought here to lecture and give practical dem- onstrations on the rules and play- ing techniques of "Canada's sport- ing Pastime."

A Mr. George Hayes of the Nation- al Hockey League refereelng stuff will be again the chief instructor. His co-instructor has not been nam- ed yet, but will no doubt be one of the leading players or coaches from big league circles. Mun.-ph Chamber- lain, present coach of the Char- lottetown Islanders. was the other leading instructor at last ;:ar's school. Leaving his coaching duties with Sydney Millionaires. Chamber-, lain came here for the three day school, and in co-operation with Mr. Hayes, made an excellent job of putting the school over in a highly successful manner

It is generally felt here, and it is probably no misconception either. that Chamberlain's likeable man- ner and his competent demonstrat- ion and talks on coaching and play- ig technique, were some of- the main factors that guided local officials in obtaining his services as manager- coach of Charlottetowns re-entry in the Big Four circuit this year. The fact that referee Hayes has been asked to come back again this year bears mute testimony of the respect held for him here as kn ex- celient and competent instructor. Local officials consider themselves fortunate indeed in being able to have him here again to head the school. ,

The object of the school is of course well known here now. Its main purpose is to instruct and de- velop local talent in the art of re- fereeing and coaching so that they may in turn impart that knowledge to the many others and at the same time oiificiaie for the many leagues in operation throughout the Prov- ince during the winter months. The success of this program during the past two years was borne out here last winter. The Department of Physical Fitness developed a pool of referees and sent them the length and breadth of the Province to offic- iate at organized league games that added much to the enjoyment and success of the Provincial hockey ac- tiviiies.

The program has nobbeen limit- ed to Island enthusiasts only. Many well-known Maritime officials. sportswriters etc., attended and were highly impressed with the school. It was only recently that one prom- inent Mainland spcris lumnist expressed his personal opinion on the subject. "It was the best school of its kind I have ever attended. I think it is a wonderful thing in the way of sports development and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is my hope that I will be able to attend again this year if file is planned to be i

This past week has been windy and cold and this type of weather takes much of the pleas- ure out of hunting. Furthermore birds are trickier targets when a stiff breeze is blowing. From now on till the freeze-up. and maybe after that, its the goose and duck hunters who will have their in- nings.

Wildgeese are present in large numbers and indications paint to a heavy flight this fall. The south- ward movement of geese is expect- ed to continue for another two weeks and by mid-November the heaviest fall concentration of can- ada geese for many years is hoped for. Quite a few of the hookers have already been shot and most gunners who have been lucky re- port the birds in good condition. when focd,is abundant geese fat- ten very quickly. A wildgoose fed on 9. mixed diet of grain and eel grass makes for a table bird that is hard to beat.

Hunters are reporting that the Hun ooveys are more in evidence this past week and it is possible to start four of five coveys in an afternoon. There is I reason for this pleasing situation, Early in the season the l-luns showed I r” f psrtlslity for potato fields. Bulb ing dogs found the going xtrsmely hard among the matted vines and drills and forsook this type of cover fcr stubble fields and such cover where the going was easier. Hunt- ers did not try to force their dogs to stick too closely in potato patches. because they found it tired ihcir setters or pointers and dulled their hunting edge.

There was a heavy acreage of potatoes in the Province this sea- Ion and today the big bulk of this crop has been harvested and, the hunting ares narrowed down so- oordingly. On the other hand pheas- ants are much harder to locate than they were during the first few days of the open season. when the Docks break up and scatter the singles and pairs are hard to iconic. and when they are located
