We have read this little volume with no small degree of interest, and at times, when the author is describing some wild scenes of Spanish warfare, our blood has tingled in our veins at our own recollection of that strange yet gallant race. But the prevailing tone of these '-‘ Lays" is aceful an tender, and some of them rise to t e highest strains of poetical fancy. The author, like so many others gifted with the “ divine tire" of poesy, is too modest and retirin , but we doubt not that this on re- tondinglitt e volume will pave the way ora broader and higher ﬂight 0 his aim, and its appreciation lead him to favor t o public with something still wortliier his muse and his really line powers of versilicatiou.
