Ereworts Leacue.—A very interesting meeting of the Literary Departmentof the E. L., First Methodist Church, was held last evening. Thesubject, “Tithes and Tithing” was opened by a clever and inter- esting paper py Mr. D. Schurman, and the discussion which followed was taken part in by many present. The pastor, Rev. G. M. Campbell, presided.
Sr. Perer’s Scuoo.room.—A very suc cessful doll and candy sale was held in St. Peter’s Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. There were very many doils offered for sale, some of which were prettily dressed, and almost al! found purchasers. Aprons, pinaforcs, calendars, and other useful as wellas ornamental! articles were also on sale. The home made candy was alao eagerly sought for. The ladies interested are to be congratulated upoo the success of the undertaking.
Latp ro Rest.—The funeral of the late Miss Bridget Lantry took place this morn- ing, and the large number of citizens in at- tendance testified to the esteemin which she was held. Tbeschool children attend- ed ina body. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Geo. E. Hughes, Kobert Fennell, W. F. Carter, Patrick Blake, Alexander Mac- donald, and Angus Macdonald. The Pon- titical Mass of Reyniem in St. Dunst#n’s Cathedral was celebrated by Hie Lordship Bishop Macdonald, assisted by Rev. Dr. Morrison, Rev. J. J. Macdonald, and Rev. J. F. Johnston, Rev. I. R. A. Macdonald directed the ceremonies. The altar wae appropriately draped, and the congregation was very large.
Lossy Her Proreitor.—-Word was re- ceived Saturday by the Halifax agents of the Dominion Coal Company, to the effect that the Coban is in difficulties 45 miles WN WofSt. Pierre. She was reported at ll a. m. Friday as having lost her prepellor. The Benayista, row on her way from St. John’s to Sydney, would probably pick herup. In case ofa failure on the part ofthe latter boat to run across the eripple, the Douglae H Thomas, lying at Louisburg, was despatched to the seene. The Cobun is bound from Sydney to St. Jobn’s, Ntld., with a cargo of coal. She was to be paid off for the winter at this port about the last of the month. Now that she has met with an accident ehe will probably finish her voyage after repairing and then stop running until next summer. —Halifax uit,

Business Transacted.
The regular monthly meeting of the City Counci! was held last evening, Mayor Dawson presiding and every member of the Board being in his place.
After routine proceedings Mayor Dawson reported that the $10,000 of city debentures had heen sold at 5} per cent premium,' that King Street engine’ house liad been sold to Edward Flynn for $701 and the deed executed, and that he had been served with a summons from Waliace Wheatley, who claimed a refund of milk vendor’s license for 1896,
The Mayor was authorized to have the Recorder detend the city in the Wheatley case,
The Recorder’s opinion in the Redmond case was theo read. His Honor expressed the opiuion that Mr. Redmond’s claim was barred by the Statute of Limitatios. Mr. Redmond made application for damages forlo-ses sustained during the smallpox epidemic twelve years ago.
A letter was read from the Board of Fine Uuderwriters referring to the neces- sity there was for the appointment of au electrica] inspector, and intimating that she Board was willing to pav $100 per annum for such an official! prov ded the city supp'ement h‘s salary witha sum euflicient to procure the servces of a capable man, the appointment to be approved by the Board.
A petition from offizers Bradley, Taylor and Doyle, asking for new overcoats, was referred to the police committee to report upon the next meeting of Council.
