the contrary there is the odd oc- casion when a covey takes to heavy cover or matted swale grass and decides to squat. one has to prac- tically kick them out with the toe of one's boot. some coveys are very -wild. One shot and they prompt- ly leave the country and I don't mean maybe. 0 I A few evenings ago I got aiahot at a covey or twenty odd nuns my pointer trailed out of the rough into a stubble field. I was lucky and bagged a. pair but that was my first and last chance. They crossed a. three hundred yard stretch of rough and zoomed over a dense spruce woods that was a good half mile wide. In short they left the country. 0 O I An American and his guide saw them go. The guide hopefully re- marked: "They'll be back tomor- row", "oh yea". laughed the Yank, "they'll be back next June. They were only travelling in low when they crossed the rough. when they got to the wcods they shifted into second and went right on over." U 0 0

one evening this week I talked to a sportsman who hunts quite a bit on his time off. One afternoon this past week he and his wife. who also is a keen huntress and wing shot. were out hunting 1-runs. Their setter trailed a bunch through an extensive tract of sweet fern but they wouldn't hold. Finally a covey of at'least forty birds got up out of range and alter flying hall a mile alighted in the middle of a bare pasture field. They fol- lowed hopefully after thorn but again their effort was wasted. The setter went on point but the birds took wing before the hunters were within range. The next time they chcse an alder swamp for a stop- plng place and landed square in the middle of it. Again it was no dice. No sooner had they entered the elders than the whlrr of wins: lndicated their quarry had again taken off -. this time for parts un- known. O I O on their way back to the cal” they started a covey of twenty-live that was just as wild as the first. Appmximately sixty-five birde Ind nary a trigger pulled. No wonder some of our visiting hunters are wearing rather long faces. one of them remarked to me: "I've worn my legs down to the knees 'In three days hunting and havent much to show for it". I said to him: "What's wrong with Y0"? 5037" "I have to find them first before he'll hunt them" was his reply. There are quite a few dcgs with the motto: "You find 'em - Ill hunt 'em." I O 0

Cars loaded with hunters and dogs are travelling the side road: ma by-ways and oft times the rip- ple of gunfire disturbs the quiet of the countryside but don't burudl! me boys their luck . . . . this sea- son they are earning all they get.

The horses went to Par-kvlew Raceway early in May with Elmer Smith in charge; He had Billy Aubrey. Abegwelt Milady. Jimmie Clegg and Bud Abner. During the sum- mer Billy Aubrey started thirteen times and was only out of the money twice. Abegwalt Milady started seventeen times and was out of the money only once. Jim- mie Ciagg was trained up to a mile in 2.! but met with a slight accident and had to be turned out. Bud Abner was given all his early training by Elmer Smith and started during the summer tour timas. winning three races and taking a record of 2.10 2-5. Right after that he was sold to Mr. Law- son of saint John and he has raced well in his stable. Smythe Sees llctroit In Top Position

TORONTO, Oct. 13 - (CF) Detroit Red Wings probably will finish the National Hockey League schedule in first place again this V8”. with Montreal Canadiens second.

Conn smythe. general manager of Toronto Maple Leafs, made that prediction today at a press conference.

Ha outlined his opinion on each of the six clubs in the league and stressed that Detroit-which had five players among the top eight scorers in the N. H. L. last year and a sound defence to back them up-is the logical first-place team. However. "the Red Wings spread no fear in Maple Leafs dressing- rooms." the fiery hockey boss de- clared. i I-its choice of Montreal to finish second again was unexpected. Many sports observers figured retirement of star goalie Bill Durnan and defenceman Kenny Reardon might have cut the club's efficiency but Smythe couldn't agree.
