rht lately. Mr. Buntin began life as a truck driver, and as ambassed a large fortune as a paper manufac-| turer, having lived at Valleyfield, Que-| bec. He is known to have become ay millionaire. Ile was adirector in the | Defunct Exchange Baok of that city,| and was prosecuted lately for securing undue preferences when the bank burst in September, 1883. The trial excited | great interest, and was carried through | all the courtsin Montreal, ending in | Buntio’s conviction on the charge of! fraud and his imprisonment for ten} days. There has always been trouble} in his family, owing, it is said to the} old gentleman’s bad temper and rough-| ness towards his daughters, three of | whom married well, though against his | One married an Italian, Mar-| quis Ugiueont. The other two married | medical men each in good standiny. | There was trouble in the tase with the id gentleman. The last daughter, Miss | Cacouna, was educated at Vassar Col-!} lege, and was of a very independent turn of mind and determined not to be thwarted by the father. She is quite pretty, accomplished, and was a_ favo-| rite in Montreal society. A short time; ago she said to a well-known society lady in Montreal : “Oh, as for papa—if the Angel Gabriel come to ask one ol us to marry him he wouldn’t be _pleas-| ed.’ On Wednesday last Miss Buntin left for Plattsburg, ostensibly to see a} school friend living there, but she met Baldwin Hart and was married on Thursday by Rev. Henry Smyth at Trinity Church in that city. The family occupied one of the largest and most beautiful houses in Montreal. The | happy couple are supposed to be in New York, where Dr. Smith, brother-in law of Miss Buntin,is going this month to practice. Hart is a real estate owner.

Colonel Otter.

Col. Otter’s father was a son of the Right Rev. William Otter, formerly Principal of King’s College, London,and Bishop of Chichester, whose sister was married to Baron Belper, formerly M. P. for Derby, and Chancellor of the Dachy of Lancaster. Both Col. Otter and his father were in the service of the Canada company at the head office in foronto, the latter froma very early period in its history, the former until 1584, when he took a prominent posi- tion under the Dominion Government as commandantof “C” company and the new military school at Toronto. At the time of his appointment to his dual position it was generally conceded that no better could have been made, and that Col. Otter’s services in connection with the volunteer militia well entitled him to the distinction. His military career began as & private in the Queen's Own regiment, which was organized in 1862, under the command of Col. Durie. His more than average abilities and fondness for military life secured him rapid promotion, «nd when a pro-| visional battalion was organized for camp purposes at Niagara in 1864 he | went out a8 ensign in & Company com-| manded by Capt. Gilmour, When the latter became Colonel of the Queen’s Own, the subject of this sketch obtained the position of adjatant, which he held for seven years, and on Col, Gilmour’s retirementin 1875, Major Otter suc-| ceeded to his position. For ten years the regiment, admittedly one of the finest in the service, was under his command, and during that time he labored earnestly, self-sacrificing and) successfully to keep itina high state of efficiency. Though a strict discip- | linarian he was always popular with | the officers and men, and their rejoic- ing Was great when they learned that he was appointed to lead them in this campaign. In 1872 he went to Eng- land as second in command of the Wim bledon team, and in 1884 he went over | again, this time ia chief command. He} remained in Kugland for some time, at- tuched to one of the regiments of the line preparatory to taking charge ot one of the new Infantry Schools. Col, Octer is in the very prime of life, being about forty years of age. He has always taken an active interest in athletic sports, and was a few years ago an exeellent lacross player.
