and more formidable foes. It would seem that New Zealand is not the best governed colony in the world. It is said to be owing to neglect and criminal care- lessness on the part of the Government. that so many valuable lives have been lost, and so much suffering inflicted on the New Zealand colonists. The Col- onists number 200,000, and tho Moores 20,000—ten to one. Many ofthe native tribes are friendly. and could be used with effect to subdue the others.

The Ritualists in England are just now in a very bad humor. The I’rivy Coun— cil has decided against them in the fa- mous Mockonoehie case. They, it seems, have no idea of submitting to the powers that be. and of regulating their church ceremonials according to the letter of the law, for in the Church oi’St. George's in the East not one of the condemned prac- tices has been done away with. The Rev. C. F. Lawden, the incumbent, pub- licly declared that he would not, on any consideration, put out the lights on the altar. in obedience to the decision of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. This is plucky at any rate, but we can hardly see how such a clergyman can maintain his connection with the Church of England, which recognizes the au- ‘ lurity of the State in matters ofreligion. “ Punch" is peculiarly hard on the Ritual- ists. The Cartoon of one of the late numbers shows up the inconsistency of their position much more effectively than the most eloquent and logical leader could do. It tells the Ititualists that their proper place is the Roman Catholic Church, and that they are very unreason~ able in not going there. Their position with regard to the State Church is now a very anomalous one. Mr. Ernest Jones. the eloquent and uncompromising radical, is (lead. Ilis life has been a very singu- Iui‘ one. He was the son of Major Er- nest Jones of the 15th Ilussars. and ex- tremely well connected. A Royal Duke was his godfather. At eleven years of age the young enthusiast ran away from his home to assist the oppressed Poles to gain their liberty. Later in life, he joined the English Cliartists, and became their champion. Some of his writings contained treason, and he was tried and sentenced to two years imprisonment for his oil'cucc. He endured l9 months of that sentence. lie was offered a com- petence by a rich uncle if he would have nothing more to do with politics, hilt the zealous radical refused the tiller. lie was chosen by ballot to represent Mon- chcster. and had he lived it is most pro- bable he would have been returned to Parliament. He caught cold attending a politicalmeeting, and died of pleurisy. IIe extortcd the respect and esteem of his most bitter political opponents. He was incorruptibly honest and indclati- gable in his efforts to serve his country in the manner which he considered best for the interests of all classes, especially for the poorest and least powerful.
