Tae Monetery Times remarks that the Canadian Cotton Mills, in spite of the com- bination, do not, as a rule, appear to be paying exessive dividends. The Montreal Cotton Company has paid three dividends oftwo per cent. since February, six per cent. in seven months; the Hochelaga is paying 2) per cent., and the Canada Cotton Company ‘4 per cent quarterly. These re- sults have been obtained under a combina- tion which was recently renewed. There had been an undue development of this in- Gustry, with the usual result, an excessive output. Destructive competition was averted, and combination took its place. The public is suspicious of such combina- tions, and it is well to know precisely what ground there is for the popular objection. lf no part of the earnings is being carried to capital, in any form, the profits can scarcely be regarded as excessive.

More Harvesting Machines.

Tue Walter A. Wood M. & R. M. Co., ot Hoosac Falls, New York, have sent tree new self-binding harvesting machines to the Island for the purpose of experiment- ‘ng and seeing what improvements can be made before commencing manufacturing for another year.

The first machine we shall notice is the straw binder, which twists its own bands, tes the sheaf and turns it out as the Machine goes on. It is quite a novelty to see this machine at work, as it is said to “o its work so well that it does not miss More than one in two hundred bundles. The inventor, Mr. George Howe, is here with the machine.

The second is a new light steel and wood frame twine bidder. It is very light and simple in constru ‘tion, and uses an endless ehain with hooks instead ot canvas to ele- vate the grain to the knotter ;itonly uses @ small canvas on the platform. The Eastern Townships Exhibition was formally opened to-day by the Governor- General. The stables containing 30 horses, valued at about $30,000, were burned last night. During the speech of the Governor- General a man giving the name of Michael Lynch, of Boston, interrupted the speaker. , | His Excellency was speaking on the advisa- bility of encouraging the proper kind of eumgration from England and Ireland, upon which Lynch called out, ‘ What about pauper imuigration ?” No notice was taken of this interruption, but almost immediate- || ly afterwards he added, ‘‘ You are a tyrant, sir, the greatest tyrant of Ireland. “What about Luggacurran?” The interruper was at this juncture pushed off the platform and taken into custody, charged wit disturbing

Waterville, Me., claims to have raised the first horse that ever trotted a mile in- side of three minutes in America. The event is alleged to have taken place in Bos- ton in 1818, when a horse named Suarrow trotted a full mile in 2.574.

trainer, John Murphy, with the 14 year-old gelding, Keen Jim, (2.19) the other day, pleasantly remarking that a trotter which could not show a quarter better than 33 seconds was too slow for him. Murphy took the ribbons and sent his gift to the quarter in 22 seconds, a 2.08 gait.

The 3-minute race was won by Winan’s (Truro) Gypsey in three straight heats, with Leaman’s (Truro) Albert D. second and Delahunt’s (Moncton) Troublesome third, and H. J.
