The wine was none so had, being sack of an elegant body, though Creech had never the palate of a fly; and presently, after I had drunken, I looked about me, but could nothing of the booty. “Ah’’ says I, “I'll warrant you have filled your purse, Danny. You're no com- pany for a poor wastrel like me.”’

Now he had, as it were, laid the job fairly before me, and for the moment I was in the mind to take him at his word; but the next second I had abandoned the purpose, for though f had little doubt that I could manage the three with them in a drunken condition, I was not for spilling blood, at any rate at that stage. So what does I do but merely stick forth my foot and kick the weapons into the air. That fetched Creech to his legs mighty sudden and scowling at me he “Is this serious Dick?’

Look at you—you with your fiue fancy dress, for all the world like a gentleman in His Majesty's service. Stout muscles, Dick, but small wits behind ‘em. What say you? You shall have the trinkets, and the guineas too if you can get ‘em. But an you fail we'll have you, by hell, body and soul, for twelve months.”’

I knew ‘twas his inflation that drew him on thus, but it served my purpose; and so, after a pause 1 said, ‘‘How long do you give me for the job?”

“Til this hour to-morrow night,’’ Dan, seeming to consider.

Thereupon I jumped to my feet. ‘I’ take you,’’ says 1; ‘‘and now for another glass.’’

Creech stares at me for a moment in stupid wonder, and then solemnly reached out his hand, which I took. Filling a glass, I nodded at the three and gave them a toast ‘Here's to me, lads!’’ I says.

But at that Creech turned black, and spilling the wine he was drinking, looked at me savagely. ‘‘Damn you!” he said, ‘‘keep your toasts to yourself, and get you gone, or Tom out there will have leave to thrid you with bullets.’’

But having made my point I was in no humor to be offended at the surly hulks, and so I tossed off the wine very leisurely ‘‘Good, Danny,’’ I said; ‘‘there’s sense in your tipsy brain yet. Best go to bed and nurse itt, for you'll sad al) your wits to-night."

Re it enacted by the City Council of the City of Charlottetown as follows:—

ist. The rate of assessment on Real Estate for general Civie purposes under said Statute, for the year commencing the first day of Jan- uary, A PD 1896, and ending the thirty-first day of December, A 0 i896, is hereby specified and fixed at the rate of one per centon every dol- lar of the value of Real Estate, as assessed by the Assessors of the said City of Charlotte- town in the General Assessment Book and Valuation Roll of all Real Estate and Person- al Property liable to taxation in said City, and of all persons liable to pay Poll Tax therein, made and duly returned by them on the eleventh day of April, A D 1896.

2nd. The rate of assessment on Personal Property tor such general Civie purposes, for the year commencing the firstday of January, A D 18%, and ending the thirty-first day oi December, A D 1896, is hereby specified and fixed at the rate of one per cent on every dol- lar of the value of Personal Property as as- sessed by the Assessors of the said City in the said General Assessment Book and Valuation Roll, made and duly returned by them as aforesaid.

Ist, Therate of Assessment on Real Estate fora Waterworks Fund under said Statute for the year commencing the first day of Jan- uary, A D 1896, and ending the thirty-first day of December, A. D. 1896, is hereby specified and fixed at the rate of one-eighth of One per cent on every doliar of the value of Real Bs. tate »s assessed by the Assessors of the said City of Charlottetown in the general Assess- ment Book and Valuation Koll of all Real Es- tate and Personai Property liable to taxation in said City, and all persons liable to pay Po!l Tax therein made and duly returned by them on the eleventh day of April A. D_ 1596.

2nd. The rate of Assessment on Personal Property for such Water Works Fund for the year commencing the firet day of January A D is86. and ending the thirty first day of December, A. D , i896, is hereby specified and fixed att: e rate of one-eighth of one per cent onevery dollar of the value of Personal Proper- ty as assessed by the Assessors of the said City in the said General Assessment Book and Va- luation Roll, made and duly returned by them as aforesaid.

3rd The amount of Poll Tax to be paid by every Paes returned by the said Assessors in said Genera! Assessment Book and Valu- ation Roll as liable thereto for such Water works Fund under said Statute, for the year commencing the first day ot January, A. D. 1896. and ending the 3ist day of December,A D 1893, is hereby specified and fixed at the sum of Ten Cents (l0c) on the poll of every person so assessed and returned as aforesaid.

That upon the refusal! or neglect of any owner or occupier of any house, warehouse, cellar, yard, field or other place in the said City to remove any dirt, manure, animal or vegitable substance, stagnant water, filth or reiuse matte: of any kind off and from such premises, after receiving 48 hours notice from the Sanitary Ufficer to remove the same, it shall be the duty of the Sanitary Officer, and he is hereby authorized and required to cause the same to be removed at the expense of the owner or occupier so notified as aforesaid.
