The December meeting otf the Hampton W.M.S. was held st the Manse on Tuesday evening, Dee. 7th with an attendance of l5 members and 2 visitors. The president, Mrs. Clayton Morrison occupied the chalr with the wor- ship service taken by Mrs. George Willett. The theme for this meet- ing was “The Christian World at the feet of Jesus Christ". A Christ- mas carol “silent Night" was ‘beautifully rendered by the mem- bers. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. followed by the reports from the different officers. Hymn No. 64 was sting. The candlelight Christ- mas service was beautiful and watchfully carried out by Mrs. A1- bert Best, Mrs. Clifton Ince, Mrs. Jack Dixon, Mrs, William MacFar- lane and Mrs. Gordon Wlllett. Hymn No. 4'7 was sung.

This ls an interesting hawk for two reasons. First, it is circum- polar ln distribution, and second, scientists differ- as to whether there are three kinds of Gyrfal- cons, or but one.

Since Gyrfalcons nest in the Arctic regions of the northern hemisphere, one ls not surprised to find that they visit England when winter drives them south. Caught and tamed, they provided a sport for the King and his nobles who alone dared to go hawking in the days of old. Their size, strength. and swlftness enabled them to mas- ter the largest game-birds. Sucn birds could be very destructive to poultry it‘ they had a liking tor settled districts-which luckily for themselves, they haven't. In my records there are only two entries: a Black Gyrfalcon was "taken here. in 1904,” with no other data; and a white Gyrfalcon was shot. at Southport by W. Horton in March, 1941.

For many years Gyrfalcons were classified as White, Gray, or Black, according to their color, and were supposed to be different species. Then they were believed to be but subspecies, or geographical races. Now even this classification ls re- jected, and the races are believed to be "color phases." which may occur in the same brood.

Observers are agreed that Gyr- falcons prefer birds to any other food, usually capturing them on the wing. In the far north. how- ever, they often nest in the vic- inity of colonies of auks, whose bones are found in great piles near ‘the falcons nest. From Labrador to Alaska these falcons are scourges to ptarmlgans, gulls, guillemots shore birds of all kinds, snow bunt»- ings, as well as lemmings and Arc tic hares. An observer in 5t. George Island (in the Bering Sea) said that one winter gyrfalcons came in such numbers that they nearly exterminated the wrsns and

Today, Dec. 9th, was bright und not too cold so I fared forth to see whet Nature was doing. All the deciduous trees but one. had cast their leaves. The exception was a white Oak on the bank of the “creek," which still flaunts its green, gold, and bronze leaves. Though picturesque, this condition is bad for the tree, because it means the sap is still rising. If a severe frost should develop suddenly, the sap would freeze, and by its ex- pansion would split and loosen the bark. Our native hardwood trees (birches. maples, etc.) nvoid this deadly injury by casting lbw‘ leaves early. In the garden the only green shrub was a rose, Paul's Scarlet, which was ln full leaf. On the banks of the creek there are some fine bushes of the British Hazel-nut. They have been growing there for some years without fruit- ing, but now I notice they are bear- ing two ldnds of buds-which ls a good sign. .

Yanofsky Says Russians Great, I Chess Players A
