Other methods of dropping the “mitt” into the Imperial box may be proposed which will be more in keeping with our resources and needs and perhap* worthier of our position in the Empire; but it is doubtful if any would be more spectacu - larly popular.

Two things certain!y might be done very easily. A recruiting station for a Cana- dian regiment could be established in the Dominion, and a training ship where Canadian youths bitten with a desire to serve in the navy might be initiated, could be anchored atone of our ports. This would foster a personal interest among our people in Imperial campaigns all over the world, and tend to increase the soli- darity of the British nation whuse bonnd- aries include Australia a Md Devonshire, Dawson City and Londoa Town, A family who Lad a sen fighting on the frontiers of India or sailing with a ship in the China Sea, who realize very vividly that they belong to the ple which is leading in the governmes®of the planet.

Another line our contribution might take is assistance in maintaining the defences at Halifax and E+quimault. This would be an improve-your-own property sort of a policy, which might have con- siderable said in ita defence, and would direct!y relieve the Imperial Treasury. We have already been doing something toward improving our militia, notably by the purchase ofa new arm; but it would appear that Sir Michael would like the Canadian contribution to take a form which would Rave the “Home” Govern~ ment freer to divert its energies to the advauce in Africa and Lhe protection of our commercial interests in the Pacific.
