Olympic Torch Scholarship

Are you a high performance athlete thinking about your future...working toward a degree or diploma and a career after your competitive days are over? Are you a full time coach trying to improve your profes- sional skills... then read on, we might be able to make things easier for you.

For the past four years, the Canadian Olympic Asso- ciation had been helping athletes and coaches work toward a better education through the Petro-Canada Olympic Torch Scholarship Fund program. For the 1991/92 academic school year, the scholarships -- totalling more than a quarter ofa million dollars -- have been awarded to 83 students athletes, and nine coaching students, representing 42 different Olympic and Pan American sports, form across the country. Student-athletes, and coaches have received scholar- ships through the program,,. a partnership of the COA and Petro-Canada. Each year, scholarships are awarded to up to 100 athletes and eight coaches.

To qualify, an athlete or coach must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant, and must be involved in a Olympic or Pan American sport. An athlete must be enroled, full time, ina Canadian post-secondary institution - collegiate, technical or university level - while pursuing athletic goals. (S)he must be a current or former member ofa national team, involved witha provincial or Canadian varsity team, or part ofa provincial or national training program conducted or endorsed by the Canadian Federation of Sport Organi- zations for the Disabled. At the collegiate or techni- cal level, an athlete is eligible to receive $1,000;at the university level, the scholarship is $2,000.

Coaching scholarships are available to those who are attending, full time, a Canadian university ina post- graduate coaching science related program. The applicant must be active, or have experience in the development of provincial or national calibre athletes,

and preparing for a career in coaching. Each coaching scholarship is $8,000.
