French Canadian members of Parlia ment who have all along been strongly in sympathy with Riel are now equally as stroogin their denunciations since he attaeked the Catholic Church and clergy in a published interview alleged to have taken place between himself and the chaplain who accompanied him to Re gina. One of the French members states that Riel has taken exactly the right course to insure his execution and the withdrawal of all sympathy that has been showo him by his co-religion- ists and fellow countrymen. He can only account for the rash step Riel has taken in denouncing the Charch to his desire to secure the sympathy and assistance of the Protestants, whom he believes can save his neck.

COLONEL IRVINE’S OFFENCE.

Telegrapuic communication haviog being again established with Prince Albert, the government are now in re- ceipt of daily advices from that point. Colonel Irviae, in charge of the Mouat- ed Police at that station, who is charged with cowardice, has been called upon by the government for a full explanation us to his action in not following up the Duck Lake fight after he bad formed a junction with Major Crozier’s force, and not charging the half-breeds, who, at that point then only pumbered about one hundred and fitty men. He is also questioned as to the course he followed in remaining quietly at Prince Alber! when he could, with the force of 250 men at his commend, have cut off Riei’s retreat from Batoche after his engage- ment with General Middleton had he advanced from his position. He is also charged with not having sent out scouts or made any attempt to communicate with the General.

THE DEFENCE.

According to reports received from him, he justifies the coarse he took by showing the impossibility of his advan- cing to assist General Middleton, which he says could only have been done by leaving the lives of those imprisoned at Prince Albert unprotected and at the hands of the rebels, whose object was to capture that point. With regard to following up the Duck Lake fight the explanation up to the present time is not satisfactory, so far as can be learn- ed. Referring to the delay in com- munivaiing with General Middleton be Says that on every occasion his scouts were interrupted. The Comprroller of the Mounted Police states that he will probably receive a full report from Colonel Irvine next week.

THE SURRENDER OF POUNDMAKER,

In the House of Commons this after- noon the Minister of Militia read the following telegram from general Middle- ton, dated Baitieford:—

Ihave made prisoners of Pound- maker and Lean Mar, Yellow-Mud- Blanket and Breakiog-Through-the-Ice, being the most influential and dangerous men about him. I have also White Bear, who killed Indian Instractor Payne, and Wahwainita, who killed Freemont, the rancher. My next task may be Big Bear. Poundmaker brought in the teams taken and gave up 210 stands of arms and five revolvers. I have ordered them to give up the flour taken and the horses and cattle, and 1 am sending part of the police to see that itisall given up. The Nine- tieth has just arrived by steamer and is in camp. The rest are coming by land. Ifobliged to move on the Indians i propose to organize a force of i..ounted infantry made up of mounted police, Belton’s scouts and some mounted artillery men, in all about three huudred men, and with light carts and as little baggage and supplies as possible,so as to scour the whole country and strike rapidly. 1 expect that Big Bear will soon give up. If he does I shall treat him as T have done Poundmaker. If he does not I shall attack him immediately.
