market rose to a record high and made one of the year’s biggest gains Wednesday.in the wake of the Democratic victory in Tues- day's elections.

Key stocks rose from fractions to around 2 points generally but there were wider gains.

Wall Street had anticipated Democratic success but the event itself seemed to convince the in- vesting public that tlhe U.S. its in for greater spending by the gov- ernment. Remarks by President Eisenhower W ed 0 es (1 a y once again linked Democrats with free spending.

The market churned in- decisiver at the start with heavy

The Associated Press average of 60 stocks rose $2.20 to a record of $201.40. The gain matched last Wednesday’s and was topped this year only by the rise of $2.40 Jan. 3

Based on the gain in the AP averages, the quoted value of stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange rose an esti— mated $2,798,000.000.

The industrial component of the AP average was up $3.30 to a record peak, the rails rose $1.60 and the utilities 00 cents. both to highs for the year.

Distillers Seagrams and Granlby Mining each rose 1/2 among Canadian issues on the New York Exchange. Canadian Pacific was up ‘14, Dome Mines advanced 1/0, Hudson Bay Mining gained 1% and Mlclntyre Porcu- pine rose a point. International Nickel dropped a point.

Most Canadian issues on the American Exchange remained unchanged from Monday. Excep- tions were Shawinigan. up 1%, Molyibdeni'te up ‘ 16 and Richwell down 1-16.

TORONTO ICP' — The stock market scored its first general advance in three weeks Wednes- day in moderate trading. Base metals were up 1% points and western oils one point. Golds were higher one-quarter.

Final volume of 2,971,000 shares Egompared with Tuesday‘s 2,405,- Base metals rallied smartly near the close. International l_\lickel at 0571; and Norandn at 041/: each added 374. Trinity Chi- bougamau was the most active mine, trading 147,900 shares. It was up 4 cents at 44 cents.

In Western oils Pembina moved up 5/3 at 9% and Pacific Pete was ahead 1/2 at 181/11. Among lower priced oils, Petrol lost 16 cents at $1.14 of 193.700 shares. McIntyre added 1 point at 84% and Preston East Dome ad- vanced 20 cents at $6.40 among golds.
