SUVA, FIJI I3LAND&- Almost certainly the Queen will remember Fiji as the singing islands. The program of her visit moves lyre form choir to choir of'native voi- ces, which in Fiji are one of the intrained wonders of the world.

At a dres rehersal today of the Queen's visit to Adi Cakobau School at sawani. I heard the Fi- jian sing as they will for the royal party. Now I know what :hey mean by that old black man- .c. so affecting was the singing. tears came to the eyes: of one ..f :he women reporters. Anybody who knows women reporters will IECOEHIZE this as a major league miracle.

The melting effct of Fijian music. aside from its floating through flower scented air and Jeckoning palm trees. lies in the fact that Fijian: harmonize in- stinctively. One will start sing- ing in a bus. and the rest will join in. each falling i.nto a voice part for balanced choir; Women sing at their work. And from an outrigger canoe across the bay will come the haunting "lac. Lei". a farewell song. Never have I bnon more conscious of having a singing voice of a draining wash- basin.

Like many s. plant that has been closely associated with civilised man over the centuries, holly has a favored place in our traditions and ceremonials. Its use long ante- daitcs the Christian era. In fact, it was an integral part of pagan rites at the festival of Saturn held in December when daylight days are short. Folklore and le- gend are rich in beliefs about the symbolism of holly, and our pres- ent-day enthusiasm for this decor- ative woody plant stcms from iihat ancient heritage. There are num- erous kinds of holly native to many parts of the world, but those of greatest garden interest arc to be found in our own coun- try. Great Britain and the Ori- cut.

Faith is one of those human at- trlbuites that manifests itself in curious ways. In the Middle Agem men in various professions ex- pressed their abiding faith and devotion by adopting Saints to serve as patrons for their chosen fields of endeavor. It was only natural that gardeaier-s should have a special patron and, curl- ously enough, they chose St. Flacre, who is always portrayed with a spade in his hand.

He lived in the seventh century and roamed from his native Ire- land to preach to the heathen Gauls near Meaux in France. He cleared a spot in the wilderness and planted a garden of fruits. flowers and vegetables. His time was divided between conf hlation and prayer, iihe (are of his gar- den. and acts of charity. Like all true gardeners his love of plants grew to such proportions that he found it necessary to enlarge his garden. Then too. the number of visitors increased and he required more vegetables and fruits with which to feed them. For genera- tions gaid in France have ob- served the feast day of their pat- ron saint by attendiing services and decorating chapels dedicated in St. Fiacrc with an abundance of flowers. His memory is also preserved in parts of Scotland be- cause of a tradition which form- erly prevailed thst Fiuzre was a Soot by birth.
