regarded as being clearly indentified, is | undoubtedly driving large numbers of | representative Liberals who have formerly supported them from the ranks ofthe party. If the Government should determine upon an appeal to the people it will,ia my judgment, only be the result of a consciousness on their part that in a few months the Local Govern- ments of Ontario and Manitoba are sure to be defeated, aad of a desire to anticipate aconsummation which would predict a fatal catastrophe to the Federal Parlia- ment. If therefore they carry out what | I believe to be their present intention, namely, to hold the elections at an early | day in orderto avoid the disastreus con- | sequences of the loss of both these pro- ' vinces, it will result practically in «# re- petition of the experieuce of 1878.”
