Thus happily terminated the first Temperance Con- vention ever assembled in Prince Edward Island. In every respect. this. Convention must be regarded as a decided success. The different organizations which have hitherto had no bond of union will. in the future. owe allegiance to a common centre. and in the unani- inity of sentiment end unity of effort thus produced. we have a good guarantee that a new era is about to ‘dewn on the Temperance cause in this Island.

A man named Broadhead. of Sliefileld. England. has confessed. to a Commission appointed for the purpose of investigation. certain enormilies for sus. taming his union. that cast into the shade everything of the ltiud before known. More than ten years he and an accomplice named Crookes have been en- gaged is outrages upon those not of the Union. or those employing people not belonging to it. More then ten years ego‘he procured the'llem'stringiug of a horse belonging to a Mr. Parker. and theft 'paid, some men between £20 end £30 to shoot'Pnrker. because he worked in a firm that employed nou- uniouisfs. ‘Three guns were fired at him. two of which took effect. Iaming him probably for life. He authorised the blowing up the boilers of a firm by putting powder under them. A man who had been frequently ‘ rattenned.‘ without effect. it. was de- termined to lame him. and he was accordingly watched by Crookes for an opportunity, but failing. powder was put into his emery and nearly blinded him. In the great re atta which took 1 on at. St. Cloud on the Seine duringt e past week an o osed on Saturday. the Western Boat Club from St. John. N. 11.. rowing a fouhoared boat won two of the International prizes. They had to compete with three Oxford and two London hosts of the same class.

The Oxford common are the creek amateurs of Great Britain. and the members of the Leander Rowing Club and the London Rowin Cllib of London. are first class oar-men. while they ran under the head of amateurs, The best common of France were also in competition. but there were no Americans. Against all tilese. then the oarsnicn of St. John have been victorious. notwith- standing their boats were almost twice the weight of those rowed by their competitors. Our boats. too. are much shorter than theirs. the disadvantage of which will be understood by everyone acquainted with ac- quatic sports. inasmuch as the water lines of the boat cannot be made as straight and sharp as when there is e renter length to carry them out.
