The Jam must be mad. and the threat shows his real disposition. Supposing it Catholic candidate presented himself to the constituency of Char- lottetown or Belfast. for instance. and threatened that. if its were not elected. a bad fenling would he raised In the District between Catholics and Protestants. what would be said of him? He would be deservedly laughed it; and the best thing Mr. Clark and his friends can do is to sink religion in political contests. as Catholics have always done. lie must maks up his mind that. if he is defeated. it will not be on account of his religious belief (if he has stiy). but purely upon political and personal grounds. As to the Patriot‘s recommending us to the Second District. all we have to say is. that we have no control over that paper. Scarchy three months ago we were going to bring Mr. Laird into the Supreme Court for gross libcls upon us. and we would have done so. were it not that be publicly retracted the imputations upon our character; but. as an anti-Confederate. no doubt he would like to see us returned upon that ticket in preference to Mr. Clsrk. in whom nobody seems to have confidence. even an an anti-Confsdctatc. except Mr. thlsn. Mr. Laird knows well that we are opposed to him politically. and he stated so in the paragraph out of which our enemies have attempted to make political capital against us. As to Mr. Palmer. Mr. Laird, and Mr. Henderson. who are said to be our friends. we sp- provs of their anti-Confederate policy.-—notbing more. The whole country does the same. but that is quite a dif- ferent thing to entrusting them with the reins of Gov- ernment. If Murray llal‘bor can return two staunch Liberals. we shall be delighted for that District to do so; but if it cannot. surely it is no evidence of Totyism in us to Wlt'll Mr. Henderson (a half Liberal) success over Mr. Prowss (an out and out Tory). The same with Belfast. It does not make any difl'crsncs to us or the Liberals whctlier Belfast chooses Mr. Laird or Mr. Duncan; they are both full Tories; but as Mr. Duncan is the biggrsl'l‘ory. we should rather see him defeated. Lssr week a series of political meetings took place in the above District. The first was held on Wednes- day. at Sutherland‘s. Head of St. Peter‘s Ray. and was ldrgcly attended by the electors of the immediate neighborhood. as also of Ray Fortune. llitv Fortune Road.the North Side. More". etc. Hilary lllclsaac.Esq.. was called to the chair about 1'2 o‘clock. Upon the platform in the rent- of the building. Were the lions. E. Wlielaa and J. Dittgwoil. the Rev. Mr. Ciuwford. (Presbyterian Minister.) Martin Melanin. lisq.. Messrs. Win. Melitven. W. I). Clark. E. Reilly. and several gentlemen not personally known to us.

The Hell. Mr. Wltelan was the first to address the meeting. which he did at considerable length in defence of himself and Mr. W. H. Clark. lfis pant political history. in connection with the Liberal Party. and the many good measures introduced by them. was placed in the most favorable light. as also his conduct in reference to Confederation. lie pledged himself to oppose that Scheme. Mr. Clark he declared to enjoy his confidence. and his vote in 1857 againht the Liberal Party was represented as a trivial matter. as much the fault of Mr. Colcs' "roughness" of manner as Mr. Clark‘s stupidity or pctulanco. Mr. Clark was. in Mr. Whelan’s opinion. entitled to their support. and while Mr. Reilly. who was young and inexperienced. "pretended" to be opposed to Mr. Clark alone. he was in reality arriving to drive Mr. Wbelan out of his kingdom with a lath.

Mr. W. E. Clark was the next speaker. 110 apolo- gised for having lost some of his " teeth.“ anti on that account no show of eloquence could be expected from him. He voted against the Bible Question. and therefore was entitled to thc gratitude of the con- stituency. lie stated that Mr. Reilly grossly mis- represented hlni in the matter of Mr. l'nlmcr‘s resolu- tion. hilt he admitted. at the same time. he did wrong in voting as he did against his Party in 1857. The whole fault. however. was attributed to his own bad temper. over which be acknowledged he had no con- trol. lie was sorry for having done that wrong. and he did not know that anything more should be re-

These facts. he thought. even in ordinary circumstances. gave him a claim upon an y con stitueacy. which Mr. Clark could not urge; but when the past political history of that gentleman was taken into con. sidcratfon.it would be found. that having onee ruined the Liberal Party. and bartoi'cd his independence for a salary of £300 per anntlin. tio confidence could be placed in him hereafter. when. perhaps. a Confederate Government. in order to bring this Colony within its grasp. might find no other means to accomplish that object than by corrupting vcnal polltlcians.-—as iii the case of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
