Bomb threat terrorizes campus Main Building evacuated by Security and City Police

ON WEDNESDAY JANUARY 26, city police and UPEI security officials searched the Main Building after the university received a bomb threat.

The security office received a call at 2:58 pm. The caller simply said that there was a bomb in Main Building and then hung up. Security said the apparently male caller sounded to be around twenty years old.

A search was begun as soon as the building was cleared out. City Police aided the security department in searching the building.

Security officer Rob MacGregor said the only significant problem was that people didn’t respond to the fire alarm very well. Most people left quickly after learning of the bomb

threat, though.

The search took about ninety notices were posted to advise those

minutes but turned up nothing. The

building was re-opened by 6pm, and

entering the building of the potential

threat.

When asked if any of the searchers had been trained in bomb removal, MacGregor was not sure. John McEntee, head of security, was confident that the City Police officers called in were “senior fellas” who had “experience at that.”

The police are trained how to recognize a bomb, but in the past specialists have had to come from out of province in response to serious local bomb threats. There is no local bomb squad.

The bomb scare was a major inconvenience and a number of classes were cancelled as a result. But as MacGregor said, “you have to check it out.”

As of Friday, security had no new information or developments in the case of the mysterious bomb threat.
