Porice Court.—Two drunks were dis- pesed of this morning, one for $1 or 4 days and the other fur $2 or 8 days. The jatter, who is an old offender, was told that if he did not leave the city within 24 hours after bis release from jail he would be giv- en three months’ imprisonment.

Picnic.—The members of the boys’ branch of the League of the Cross intend holding their anvual picnic, on Monday, the 27th inst., at Red Point. The site selected offers many inducements to parties wishing to spend a pleasant day. ‘Lhe steamer South- port will make two trips to the grounds, one at 930 a.. m., and the other at 2 o'clock, p.m. An enjoyable day may be expected.

A BLACKMAILER IN TROUBLE.—Quebec de- tectives have arrested a young man named Lauzier, residing in St. Rochs, on a charge of attempting to blackmail a number of respect- able young ladies by writing to them anony- mous and immoral letters, accusing them of offences and threatening exposmie unless the writer’s demand for hush money to be left in a certain designated place at a certain hour was complied with, A trap was laid for the writer, and he was caught in the ect of ap: propriating a decoy letter left for him on the stairway of the leading gallery of St. Rochs Church. Lauzier admitted the offence, but did not appear to think he had done any: hing very wropg.

A Lawsuit Threatened.

fa Globe’s Ottawa liar has made several false Statements regarding Sir John Mac- donald’s stock in the Canadian Pacific Rail- way ; and the Ottawa Free Press added to the Globe’s remarks that Sir John Macdon- ald owned some railway bonds as well as C. P. R. shares, held in trust by other persons. Hugh John Macdonald denounces this last statement of the Free Press as utterly false. No such shares were held in trust. Che amount of forty-one thousand dollara described as ‘* bank shares and other stocks and securities” is made up of bank stock stock in four or five loan societies and C. P. R. stock. How much GC. P. R. stock his father owned Hugh John Macdonald could not say, at present. But whatever there iz, was b vught in the open market in eighteen eighty-eight. It is possible that jegal pro- ceedings will be instituted against the Globe and other offending papers.

In the House of Commons yesterday was private members day. The discussion on Clark Wallace’s anti-combinsrers bill dis- covered members of the Opposition in consistent attitudes upon the policy of protection. While some stated that com- bines were the result of protection, others were decidedly unfavorable to the removal of duty upon specific lines, arguing, as did Lister, that no one industry should be selected for subjection to the chilly ine finences of unrestricted comps:tition, unless all were treated alike. The bill stands for a third reading. The government have given notice they intend to take Monday for public business.

Four divorce bills passed on division, all the Catholic members voting against them.
