—FROM OLD AGE -- One of the oldest residents of Nail Pond Settle- ment known as John Arsenault and over ninety years or age is at the point of death from a genera] weakness oc- casioned by old age and intirmities. For the last sixty years this pioneer resident was one of the best known farmers around Tignish and a great worker for any cause which tended to promote the welfare of the public. He has rared a large family of children and all of whom along with his nm- erous friends are doing all they can to make, his declining days happy in the thought that he was highly esteem- ed by all. Sin—Below is a list of seventeen island boys for whom i hold Christmas presents forwarded by tho lied Cross Society, and whom i am unable to 10- rate, although every method has been tried except this one. it“ their friends would kindly forward , me their correct address, stating first; their regimental number, and their rank, whether private. corporal or ser- geant. etc., number of the company. section. squadron. battery and battal- ion by corps. as the case may he, i be- lieve it will yet be possible to deliver the parcels to them. it is important that a private sol- dier‘s address should be definite. if an inl‘antryman, the number of his bat- talion and the number of his company, rank first in importance; if an artil- ieryman. the number of his battery and his brigade; if amenibcr of a mounted corps. the name of the corps and the number of the squadron or troop. it is not necessary to name the locality. as the General Post Of- iice in London know at all times where the different units of the Canadian Ex- peditionary Force are located. A sample address is as follows: “Regimental No. 23069 Me. John Smith Company 12 Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force
With respect to Non Commissioned officers. from lance corporals to Her geants. it is not necessary to name their company. as there are only about one hundreli and thirty (130) non com- missioned officers to a battalion, while there are nine hundred and thirty (930) private soldiers.
in regard to officers, It is only neces- sary to give their rank. such as Lieutenant. Captain or Major, and the number of their battalion, as there are only twenty-seven (27) otiicers to a battalion. Non-commissioned oflicers and privates are known. first by regi- mehtai number. afterwards by name. Officers have no regimental number.
