Ch’Town Nurse ‘ Joins Missionary Order Of Sisters

Miss Pauline Noonan, R.N. lent Wednesday for Alexandria, OIn- tario, where she will enter “Im- maculata House” of the Congre- gation of Our Lady’s Mission- anies.

This Congregation of Sisters is the only English speaking order for foreign missions in Canada. Their missions are at present in Africa and Japan.

Miss N oonan received her early education at Notre Dame ‘Aca- demy, Fri-nee of Wales College and St. Dunstan’s University. In Sept., 1955, she entered the Char- lottetown Hospital School of Nursing, from where she graduat- ed in May of this year. >

Miss Noonan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Noonan, Char- lottetown, and is the second mem- ber of their fiarmily to join a re- ligious missionary order. Her brother, Rev. Allan F. Noonan, O.M.I. is a missionary priest of the Oblates of M a r' y Ilm- ma‘ulate and is at present in the Indian Residential School at Kamloops, British Columbia.

Assault Case Is Adiourned

A New Argyle man was re- manded to November 28th when he appeared on a change of assault in County Magistnate’s Court Wednesday morning.

The change was placed by his niece who told the investigating officer that the accused had struck her on the face with his hand. ‘ ‘

The accused told the court that the complainant wanted the charges withdrawn. It was further noted that the accused would be taking treatment in the future for his drinking halbit.

Magistrate Gilbert A. Gaudret presided.

RCAF Will Conduct Model

OTTAWA (CH—Following is the text of acting prime minis- ter Green’s statement on a new freight rate increase allowed the railways:

0n the hearing of the appeal from the decision of the board of t r a n 5 port commissioners awarding the railways n in- crease in freight rates in order to meet a proposed increase in wages, it was agreed by the eight provinces and the rail- ways:

(1) That the wage increases are reasonable;

(21 That a railway strike would be a national disaster and must be avoided.

They disagreed on the propri- ety of the action of the board of transport commissioners in basing an increase in freight ' rates on an anticipated wage increase whic“ had not been unconditionally agreed upon by the railways and their employ- ees; the provinces asked that the order made by the board be disallowed on this ground.

We consider that, in future, the railways and their employ- ees must come to a definite

embark upon a policy of sub- sidizing wage increases; there would be no end to demands on all governments if such a policy were adopted.

It is however recognized by the government that there are seriOus inequities in the present freight rate structure which have both contributed to, and been aggravated by, the sys- tem of horizontal rate i v creasesf The government has already indicated its intention to move towards a solution of

' these problems.

Representatives of the prov- inces made it clear during the current hearings that their chief request is for a complete revision of the freight rate structure. Obviously this could not be undertaken in the cir- cumstances of the present ap- peal and in view of the cer- tainty of a nation—wide railway

A study is being undertaken at once to wonk out measures to relieve against inequities in the freight rate structure, including any that may be aggravated by the present increases.

Stops are also being taken to set up a suitable body to review

the genenal field of railway problems and policy. This study will include not only a compre- hensive consideration of the railway freight rate problem— includ‘ing the situation of the long haul provinces in the West and in the Atlantic region—hut also other specific problems which require solution if Can-
