Tre members of the ‘Sir John A.” Hook and Ladder Co. marched in proces- sion through the streets of this city yester- day evening, with the wagon and apparatus drawn by a team in the rear, the men, well dressed in a neat uniform, presented a very active appearance.

At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, Peter McGuigan, drunk and disorderly on Pownal Street, was fined $3 and costs or 14 days; John O’Mahony, drunk and ineapable, was fined $2 and costs, or 8 days; A. O'Neill, for the same offence, was fined $3 and costs, or 14 days.

Srramer Southport will leave Shaws Wharf on Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, at 6, p. m., calling at Westville, returning early the fo!- lowing morning. This will be convenient for all parties wishing to attend the political meeting to be addressed by Hon. Dr. Tup- per and Hon. James McDonald.

Ln our report of the second class race for sail boats, yesterday, the name of ‘‘Ella B.” appeared for first money, instead of the ‘* Grey Hound,” by Capt. James Taylor. The “Ella B.” collided with the ‘‘Maple Leaf” on the course; one of the ‘ Ella’s” crew was knocked overboard, and she lost considerable time by picking him up.

Tue St. Paul’s Sunday School Picnic came off at Shaw’s Wharf to-day. The steamer, which left Ferry Wharf at ten o’clock, was crowded with ladies and child- ren. A large number also visited the vrounds in the three o’clock boat. They will, no doubt, spend a pleasant day.

Me. R. D. Bamorics, B. A, of King’s College, Windsor, has arrived to take charge of St. Peter’s Boys’ School, Mr. Harris being about to take duty in Nova Scotia. Our readers may, remember that in the notice we republished from the Hali- fax papers of the last Enccenia of King’s College, Mr. Bambrick was mentioned as having taken high honors in classics, and also received the prizes for both Latin Prose and Latin Verse composition. The papers congratulated Mr. Bambrick on his being one of the most successful students of the College for many years past. We heartily wish Mr. Bambrick success in his work among us.

It is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have heen regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lasting qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compared with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price.

The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the.Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “‘SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coalas SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sel! coal by such means are only so many admissions on the

character of SYDNEY COAL,

It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances poe giving orders to truckmen and others for SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed apon in this way.

Every vessel lomled at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished with a certificate of the cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certificate.
