Appealing Your Canada Student Loan: ,

This week’s column will be a guide for those students who have, or are considering appealing their Canada Stu- dent Loans. Although many of us have been through the appeal process, few students know exactly what happens, or when.

Hopefully I can clear up some of the areas that seemed to have been the most con- fusing to students.

1. There is no deadline for

appeal. Although it may be in your better interest to file an appeal as soon as possible, there is not a specific deadline for receipt of appeals.

2. You are eligible to appeal: i) if you did not receive the amount of award requested ii) if your award was adjusted. 3. You may appeal the assessed student contribution, assessed parental contribu- tiona, and/or assessed educa— tional costs. The usual basis for appeal is an extenuating circumstance; an extraordie

nary expense that has af— ‘

fected one or more of the assessed areas. Your reason

for appeal may not be one of _‘

the more common reasons following, but do not let that deter you from appealing your loan if you feel you can-

not meet your expenses for,

the coming year. 4. Student contribution may be appealed — due to excep-

tionally low income; — due to unemployment; — if you attended intersession courses or summer school.

5. Parental contribution ap- peals will be considered in the case of: — funerals; — Legal fees; — weddings; — depen- dent relatives; — unavoidable

emergency home repairs; strikes, unemployment, sickness that may have af- fected parental income.

6. An appeal of educational costs will be considered based on an increase in cost fol- lowing the original applica- tion for loan.

The Student Aid Officials of the Department of Educa- tion will evaluate any new information your appeal has provided them with, and will then issue to you a reassessed claim.

Most loans are settled at this stage, but, if you are still

unsatisfied with the result, you may state your case to an Appeal Committee. This Committee considers and re- views exceptional appeals.

Oh, and remember, it’s still not too late to file your initial Student Loan application.

Hi there! What’s a great, all-around normal person like you doing reading a zany column like this?

I guess you figure I’m feeling better now. Maybe

I was talking to one of my professors the other day (“Really,” you say),.to tell him why I’ve missed'at least five classes in succession; he said he’d already figured I must be-sick because there were no restaurant reviews in recent issues of the Gem. I laughed. And besides, it was a little bit funny. I

would think that since I know so much about doing laundry that I could never make a dumb mistake. Wrong.

I have 'thi'slittle red purse

Ron quips. It’s not important “fright now,-I say). Anyway, I adecided to wash the little red “purse. I figured the dye would probably run, since it already ruined a pair of bn'IIian white getaways this summer; so, I washed it separately —' always thinkin’, eh? ' Alright. Imagine it’s washed now. It’s dripping all over the floor, so I rush it,

not to the hospital (too long a wait there for a real emer- gency like this), but to the dryer.

I took it out before it started to smoke. However, I noticed my little red purse was all mushy. You see, there was cardboard‘ holding my little red purse together. I speak in the past tense for a very good reason.

If you’re into morals of stories, here’s one for you: Never ever ever wash little red purses, throw them out.

You know, every week there is a little something to be learned in this column. I’ve learned that—l can abuse little words (tee-hee) at will, and you can’t stop me na- na-na-na-na.

It’s been fun writing this week’s column, I trust you will enjoy it too. Take care of yourselves, I’ll be back next week, same time same place.

(a la “Purple Rain”), pro- ducers Richard Zanuck, David Brown and Alan Livingston have announced the launching of a major search for a new recording artist to play the title role in their forthcoming production “Ronnie Finkelhof, Super- star.”

For the Warner Bros. re- lease, which involves a teen- ager who makes it big as a rock star, Zanuck, Brown and Livingston will, upon finding their record artist- actor, first record an album with him.

Although that album would become the film’s soundtrack album, it would be widely released with heavy

promotion on its own advance of the picture. Records and films have been successfully interwoven in the past, but it is believed that the process involving “Ronnie Finkelhof, Super- star” marks the first time that an unknown, potential recording star will first. record an album and subsequently

spent many years as president of Capitol Records and was responsible for signing The Beatles, “The artist we're seeking should look l7-or 18— years old and have the poten- tial of being highly successful in the recording field. Acting ability is of course, essential. It’s a tremendous opportu— nity for the right person.

“Ronnie Finkelhof, Super- star” is,based on a novel written by Livingston which is to be published by Random House. It was acquired by Zanuck and Brown as part of their overall production deal with Warner Bros., and Livingston will co-produce with them.

Production on both the record and picture is expected to begin shortly after January I. In addition to the search for a recording artist-film star, a contemporary record producer will also be selected and be involved throughout.
